TCK04RSV Posted March 18, 2015 #1 Posted March 18, 2015 What is the deal with the windshield screws vibrating loose? I will be replacing the windshield as soon as it arrives (Clearview of course..) and I don't want to be tightening those things up every few weeks. Locktight?
Flyinfool Posted March 18, 2015 #2 Posted March 18, 2015 NOOOoooo....... No Loctite anywhere near plastic. Loctite is as bad for plastic as brake fluid. Loctite will destroy some plastics. Our bikes use ABS plastic, ABS is one plastic that WILL be destroyed by Loctite. If you feel that a thread locker is necessary, I have used a small amount of RTV on the threads, this will not damage the plastic parts and will give the screws some resistance to coming out without making them difficult to remove when you want to. If you have that much vibration, when was the last time you synced the carbs?
TCK04RSV Posted March 18, 2015 Author #3 Posted March 18, 2015 The engine runs nice and smooth. Mirrors are crystal clear. Riding around on crap roads in 20 degree weather may have something to do with it..... Question: The current windshield has slots that fit over the screws. Does Clearview also use slots or holes?
XV1100SE Posted March 18, 2015 #4 Posted March 18, 2015 I agree.. you might not feel the vibration or see it in the mirrors... but carbs out of sync will cause backfires on deceleration, vibration in the fairing.... Been a while since I've had my windscreen off (last summer)....pretty sure it matches the OEM screen - slots.
ragtop69gs Posted March 19, 2015 #5 Posted March 19, 2015 Be sure the small rubber washers are under all the screws.
djh3 Posted March 19, 2015 #6 Posted March 19, 2015 My windshield didnt have any rubber washers. I did go buy some thin fender washers to displace the pressure. The fairing looks squished where the screws tighten down.
V7Goose Posted March 19, 2015 #7 Posted March 19, 2015 It is not common for the windshield screws to vibrate loose - many of us with 100,000+ mile RSVs have never seen that (there ARE other screws on this bike that you need to watch, but not those). There are two contributing problems that you should check into - first, make sure the metal bracket into which they screw is properly secured in the center - it seems that it is common for the factory to ship the bike with only a zip tie in the center holes, and many shops skipped replacing that with the proper bolts when they did the initial assembly. There was a rash of these reports for a while, and I personally saw this on two different 2007 RSVs. Second, the two screws that secure the ends of that metal bracket to the inside shell of the fairing have only the tiniest of stupid little tabs for attachments, and these are certainly broken on every single RSV! While I am know to sometimes exaggerate for emphasis, I am NOT exaggerating here - those tabs are broken on every single RSV! While the prevalence of this problem on all RSVs (but they do not all have the problems you report) makes me hesitant to suggest it is the cause, it is still worth fixing. The repair is not terribly difficult, just see my detailed tech article in the tech library. Goose
Rick Butler Posted March 21, 2015 #8 Posted March 21, 2015 I use a small lock washer between the screw head and the flat washer which helps keep them tight by just snugging them up hand tight. I also use longer screws with the Clearview screen. Hope this helps, Rick What is the deal with the windshield screws vibrating loose?
