Well I bought an MM edition last year and on the lower fairings it looks like the clear coat is starting to peel so i took those pieces to my painter and he says it is not the clear coat but some sort of protective coating.. He thinks it is stick on and not painted on. Cannot be sanded off and resists grinding.. not sure what it is or how to get rid of it.. Was thinking maybe heat and peel it off.. either way it is unsightly and was wondering if you folks might have a suggestion..

Is this a factory application? If not my best solution might be to look for lowers and paint them...

it is likely a 3m product called a clear bra.

not a factory item and yes if you are patient with a heat gun, it will peel.

Or just get some Plasti-Dip. Paint the lowers and go with it. I think the stuff Eusa is talking about I know better as "helicopter tape" We used it to keep the front of race cars from getting beat to pieces from rocks and sand etc. Check some of these out.

Thanks Mike:

It turns out you were right and the stuff peels off with some heat.. Not easily but does come off. Under it the paint is flawless.. Wish I'd known that BEFORE I tried to sand it.. so one side will not need paint but I still need to paint the side I tried sanding.. OH WELL.. Live and learn.. Always an experience.. BUT at least I'm all pumped now because I CAN actually fix the unsightly mess it was in..

consider having the 3m reinstalled as it will happen again over the years. most body shops have the knowledge to replace that 3m coating for you.

ride safe.. ride often.. Mike
