How come when i really hammer on my 06 rstd the oil light will come on until i ease up? Then it goes off? My oil level is half way up the looking glass on a flat surface. I wven changed oils. No difference. This can't be normal?

This is pretty common.

The oil light is an oil level, not oil pressure.

When you hammer on it the oil sloshes to the rear and the oil level at the switch drops turning on the light.

With your bike level front to rear and side to side add oil until it is at the upper line on the sight glass. See if this makes any difference.

No don't do that! If you top it off it blows oil into the air box and then it runs out the drain making a mess on the ground. Mid-point is where you want it.

Don't worry about the light under hard acceleration.

The lower mark is enough, the upper is maximum. At maximum though a lot gets into the air box, thus the recommendation to stop at the mid point.

1) The light on does not necessarily mean the pump is not picking up oil, just that the level at the front of the engine is below the sensor. Part of the reason it comes on is a lot of oil is pumped up into the engine.

2) Even if the pump did get starved you cannot keep up that kind of acceleration long enough to do damage without killing yourself first.

I agree with not going over mid point. Above that you really can have mess to clean up because by the time you see the dripping down the side of the engine there is a lot of oil in the air intake boxes under the tank

Two points - first, RTFM. Your owners manual specifically states that this is normal.

Second, the oil level is not nearly as critical as some people make out. While it IS important to NOT overfill this engine, that simply means to make sure the oil in the site window is not above the upper mark while the bike is standing straight up. It is absolutely fine to fill it above the mid-point in the window, so long as there is any air bubble visible above the top of the oil. That is why the factory puts the maximum and minimum marks on the engine case to the right side of the window!

Sight window shows you the max/min oil level range. Pretty much anywhere between the marks is okay.... when the bike is straight up.

Two questions for you:

1) what oil are you using?

2) what are you doing looking at the oil light when you are accelerating hard? Shouldn't you be watching out for 1st Gen's that you'll be passing?

You mean the 1st gens disappearing ahead into the distance or pulling into the next DQ to wait for you.
