I went in to renew my expired drivers license the other day.

The lady behind the desk looks at my expired drivers license and asks: Is everything the same, address, endorsements, etc...

I say: Yes it is

Then she replies: I strongly suggest we change your hair color from BRN to Silver.....

Hummmmmmmm

My grandmother just got her drivers license renewal last week. She turns 101 years old in May! Her new license is good for 8 more years.:scared:

Nothing against your grandmother but any govn't that renews a d/l for someone that old it should be mandatory that they take written and driving testing and only renew for ONE year.

This is one of my pet peeves ... the lack of regular testing upon renewals as well as how easy it is for people to get a lic. Testing should be much harder, include more "road sense" as well as motorcycle awareness. Then there's the issue of handing out a class 5 (a basic licence here in Canada) and then allowing the person to go jump into a huge single axle truck or motorhome or pull a travel trailer with absolutely NO experience .... yet you have to take special testing and get a special lic for a small, 2 wheeled vehicle.

aarrggghhhh!!!!

now let this dog lie and not get po-lit-i-cal

Grand ma does not drive any more, she stopped 5 years ago, but the DL renewal is the easiest route to a new current photo ID. Around here you need a photo ID to see your doctor or vote.

Sure am glad to hear this... I was all in agreement with SilverT and getting ready to state my thoughts on the elderly needing to take an exam to get a drivers license.....I am still surprised though that they just gave one to your grandmother and did not require an eye, coordination test of some sort.

ahhhhhh... makes sense then. Here we have a combined driver lic / medical card with a photo. If you don't drive, the medical card is still issued with a photo.

The DL does require an eye and mini knowledge test. She passed.

There has been a lot of talk about elderly driving in WI. Having different requirements for the elderly would be age discrimination and not pass constitutional muster, giving everyone the extra test would be to expensive.

There are 50 year olds that are to old to drive, there are 90 year olds that are perfectly safe competent drivers.

At 95 grandma was working with the church helping the "elderly" by taking them shopping or to church. Almost all of those "elderly" are a lot bigger and younger than her (she now stands 3' 4" tall). She only had to stop driving due to an injury that cost the full use of her arms. She still manages all of her own affairs.

Political correctness is killing us.

Yeah, I get the senior discount now without asking quite often. Of course they call it the "young man's discount". Is the senior discount discriminatory? Probably! You get an extra tax deduction if you are past 65. Is that discriminatory? Probably! I love my discriminatory $10 lifetime senior pass to the national parks. Medicare? Probably. I'm all for testing seniors at the DL renewal. I'm almost 71. Test me!

I think we do it right in our province.

In Ontario once you turn 80, you need to renew your license every 2 years and go through an assessment process that could include a road test......from what I understand a fair number of drivers just give up and don't keep their license, rather than go through it.

If you are 80 years of age or older, you are required to renew your driver’s licence every two years. This renewal process helps keep seniors mobile and independent longer, while helping to ensure that unsafe drivers are identified and appropriate actions are taken.

You need to undergo a driving-record review, complete a vision test and participate in a 45-minute group education session, followed by an in-class screening component. The in-class screening component will help better assess your fitness to drive.

You may be required to pass a road test before being able to renew your licence, or you may be able to renew but will have to follow up and submit medical information. The driver improvement counsellor at the group education session will discuss this with you.

There is no charge for any of the licence-renewal requirements. You only have to pay the licence-renewal fee.
