jjven68 Posted March 10, 2015 #1 Posted March 10, 2015 Hey everyone, I am new here and I am looking forward to participate and hopefully enhance this forum. I just acquired a 01 RSTD with 28000 miles in great shape. Everything works well, but I am wondering about rough, noisy hard shifting. Before the bike gets to running temperature it seems the shifting is smoother. As it warms up it feels harder, crankier and louder. I almost having to kick it down and when shifting up it actually hurts my foot (no heel-toe) Any advice or comments are welcome.
Prairiehammer Posted March 10, 2015 #2 Posted March 10, 2015 Flush and bleed your clutch hydraulic lines. I sounds as if the clutch is not disengaging fully.
Freebird Posted March 10, 2015 #3 Posted March 10, 2015 Also, how old is the oil? These bikes get harder to shift when the oil gets older.
jjven68 Posted March 10, 2015 Author #4 Posted March 10, 2015 Ok I'm going to do that. Previous owner said it only had 500 mi from last service. Thank you!
djh3 Posted March 11, 2015 #5 Posted March 11, 2015 OK if oil looks decent, I would go with a flush and refill of all the hyd. Clutch, brakes. Someone elses will have to fill you in on the type of fluid. I know the Second Gens take DOT 4.
Hotrod Posted March 14, 2015 #6 Posted March 14, 2015 Lube all the pivot points on your shifter linkage.Mine got hard to shift and I lubed the linkage and it cured my problem.I used white lithium spray in a can.
MikeWa Posted March 14, 2015 #7 Posted March 14, 2015 If your idle speed is high it will shift harder into first gear. Since I like an soft easy shift I keep my idle speed down to about 950 rpm. As it goes over the 1000 rpm spec setting it tends to slam first gear. Mike
jjven68 Posted March 22, 2015 Author #8 Posted March 22, 2015 Hey guys, I finally had time to get to my problem. I flushed and change clutch fluid. It was very dirty. It definitely feels better. I think that was the problem. Thank you all for the help!!!
