Chaharly Posted March 9, 2015 #1 Posted March 9, 2015 Ok fellas I'm going to do a bit more work on my 88! My first question is that the motor has alot of corrosion on it. Looks like maybe from road salt or something like that. Its very common corrosion for an old engine. Whats a good cheap way to clean it off? Also, The battery light is flashing and my new battery doesnt come with a sensor port. I'm not interested in putting a resistor in, I'd almost rather drill a hole in the battery and install it there. It is a six cell battery that I believe I can just take a cap off and put the sensor in that hole. The reason that i'm not Jerry Rigging it is because it had a battery leak on the engine before, and there is alot of paint missing from this. Any opinons would be much obliged! And i'll make sure to do a repost of my successes with it! Thanks in advance guys!!!!
RedRider Posted March 9, 2015 #2 Posted March 9, 2015 If you aren't letting the bike/battery sit for an extended time, just do the sensor bypass. What kind of new battery did you get? Lead/acid or AGM? If AGM, it isn't going to leak anyway. Don't drill any holes in the battery. Besides, doing so is just putting in a bypass at the battery instead of behind the faring. Cleaning options? I'm not the right guy to ask about that. RR

I figure since its just a fluid level sensor it'd sense when the fluid got low in any liquid/acid battery so it wouldnt really be a bypass. We filled it up anyway so I'm DEFINITELY not drilling into it now! Its a cheap liquid/acid type just to get me started. I dont let them sit in the winter anyways I always try to start the bike once a week for a good long time. Edited March 9, 2015 by Chaharly Was confusing :)
Flyinfool Posted March 9, 2015 #4 Posted March 9, 2015 Putting the sensor in the battery will only warn you if that one cell has low acid level. If any other cell leaks it is the same as an unmonitored battery, the cell can be empty before you know you have a problem. Most battery leaks are from allowing a dead battery to freeze in extreme cold weather. I would just do the resistor and forget about it.
bongobobny Posted March 10, 2015 #5 Posted March 10, 2015 I did the hole in the cap once before I switched to an Odessey battery. It worked, but as Jeff mentioned it only monitors one cell...
Chaharly Posted March 10, 2015 Author #6 Posted March 10, 2015 I think I'll just run to radioshack and get a resistor. Thanks guys. Now about the corrosion on the engine, what would be a good way to start cleaning it off?
bongobobny Posted March 11, 2015 #7 Posted March 11, 2015 Paint stripper to get the old clearcoat off...
Chaharly Posted March 11, 2015 Author #8 Posted March 11, 2015 Paint stripper to get the old clearcoat off... Yup looks like the battery acid took about all the clear coat off anyway. I'll just leave the vents on cuz I know the people that are gonna are me, myself, and I!
