Okay before I dig in what should I look for on a slow reacting Tachometer on my 83? Only happens when it's down below 50 degrees and reads but only so far up. I can rev it up from 1200 to 4000 and it will go up slow and stop around 3000 max. When it's warm it works fine, as far as I can tell. I'm thinking the gear inside the instrument cluster is sticking.

I had that with my speedometer. The bearings that support the needle needed cleaning and lubricating. It's a delicate job, like working on a mechanical watch.

I believe I did mine with a 30 year old can of Radio Shack color TV tuner cleaner/lubricant. Mine is gone and I don't think you can get it new. I was using it to clean/lubricate a clock too and after I ran out the clock eventually quit. My wife got me clock oil for Christmas and the clock is back in service. I'd guess clock oil or another light oil (sewing machine?) would be a good choice.

And don't let the 2nd Gen guys try to convince you that it revs slowly because it's a 1st Gen. That's just jealousy talking. :D:stirthepot:

Confirms my suspicions. My tach suddenly is very slow to the point of sticking. It's pretty cold out as well. Worked just fine last week. Oh joy! Another thing to fix. :-\
