So after losing a job back during the oil spill, I fought and clawed my way up the parttime/fulltime/management tree. last October I got the chance to switch divisions from retail to home services. All day shift weekends off and a raise!! Booda boooom! We were in the process of moving offices to put the whole team in one section of the building, the Boss comes in and says Hey guys I just got a phone call. Corporate shuts us down!! all across the country over 300 people gone today! Turns out unemployment here is FL only pays max about 1/2 of what I was making and takes 4 weeks to get first check! May skip bike week this year. Dusted off the resume and hit Indeed and Monster filled out 8 apps. I called the Retail side and they'd love to have me back, full time sales instead of management though...I'll give that one some thought.

They're going to try and replace parts specialists with contacts at every major MFG across the counter, with predictive algorithms from some computer. Its been running for 6 months and gets every order wrong. meaning I then have to airfreight stuff to customer and send a tech back out a second or third time. Ha now the techs are on their own.

I Wisconsin there is a law against that big of a layoff without prior notice. Here they must give full pay and bennies for a minimum 3 months.

You may want to research your local laws.

Yea I was in simular situation. I atleast did get a severance, but it rare in this state. This "right to work state" is a joke. I have got into my old resumes and had to re-write the thing because there are absolutly no jobs in this state that I was doing. Sucks at my age to have to restart all over. Probably your in simular boat.

I feel for you. I was a victim of downsizing after 21 years. The company was a regulated electric utility and thought deregulation was coming so they reorganized and laid off as many 20 year guys as they could to get rid of most of their pensions. After a while I started working as a contractor doing the same job at power plants all over the east and north. It worked out well for me but was a bitter pill at first. I'm an independent cuss so being a temporary contractor suited my personality.

Been there, done that! After 27 yearsin one place it hurts. You just have to keep on keeping on. One door closes and another just may open that's better. I feel your pain.

Since the current company appears to not give a crap about its people I would take the old retail job back while looking for a new company to work for then, when you find a better position give them the same notice you got, 2 seconds.

Well a bunch of Life smacked me in the face since the layoff! My Girlfriends is having heart problems and complications from diabetes, so me being out of work has helped a bit, I can take her to Doc and help ask the right questions. My little Dog slipped his leash ran across the street and bit some snobby ladies little dog, I offered to pay vet bill, she called the cops now I got to deal with that. Had to cancel my trip to Bikeweek. The Oak tree pollen has turned by beautiful Galaxy Blue venture kind of yellow green the day after I detailed it!!!!! The house I used to own with the almost Ex may close this week, can't wait to see what the wright off is and if I get to pay taxes on the short sale. Parts I ordered for the kids bike were backordered so its still on my back porch making my neighbors real happy!

But I look on the bright side, I got an interview with both Home Depot and CARQUEST this week, my brothers company is thinking of starting a new division, the problem is they didn't have the right guy to run it (till now) so that may come into being this month!

Wow i just reread this post, looking up something else. Its been only two years . We now own a home free and clear (girl friend and I) both divorces finalized. I've got a great job my own office and almost up to what i was making 10 years ago. her health has improved, nothing ever came of the dog bit issue, Bike sits in a car port now so no oak tree pollen.

I am now in position to help some other folks out.

I guess when they say good things can happen, they are right.
