Freebird Posted February 25, 2015 #1 Posted February 25, 2015 Sorry folks, I usually try to just take any criticism in stride but sometimes I just let it get to me. Today I need to rant once AGAIN about ads being put in the forums. An ad was placed in a forum and I deleted it. Now we have had this discussion many times and there is even a sticky at the very top of the Watering Hole clearly stating that any ads place in the forums would be deleted. I also stated that this has been discussed enough that I wasn't going to send you a message letting you know it was deleted. I don't feel that I should have to take the time to send folks messages about something that has been clearly stated and discussed many time. Be that as it may, I still sometimes take the extra time to notify a member if they have violated this rule and let them know. Not always, it honestly depends upon the mood I'm in and how long the member has been around. Sometimes it will be a newer member who I decide maybe just didn't know better. Well today, an ad was put in the forums and I deleted it. In spite of the fact that it was a long time member who surely should have know better, I took the time to send him a message letting him know that it needed to be put in the classifieds and NOT in the form. He responded "Did you delete it" and I responded "yes". His next response was "couldn't have just moved it huh?" OK....uh...let's see...now why the he...I mean.....heck.....should I be expected to move it after this has been discussed time and time again. Why should I be expected to take the time to create an ad for somebody or move one just because you intentionally choose to do as you please? It's easy for me to move it to the classifieds. All I have to do is login as the user, create the ad, upload any pictures that are uploaded with it, figure out your zip code and ad it. Guess whether or not you want to use a PayPal address so that the "buy it now" will work. It would honestly only take me 10 or 15 minutes to move each of the ads that are placed in the forum. No problem I tell you what. Why don't we do away with the classifieds altogether. Why don't we also do away with all the forum areas like "first gen tech talk", "second gen tech talk", etc. Just have ONE forum and call it....hmmmm.....forum. We can just post everything there. Tech talk, jokes, chat, everything. We can list anything for sale there also. Then what I can do is when anybody posts a message, I can just copy it and email it to everybody and that way you won't have to worry about where you post something. Or maybe better, we can just keep all the different areas but I can just move each post as it comes in the the area where it should be. You can all just post where you want to. Same with the ads. Just post what you have for sale and in my spare time, I will create an ad for you in the classifieds. I think we should also do away with the search function. If anybody needs to search for something, just send me a message and I'll try to find it for you and send you the links. Would this make it easier for everybody? Sorry if this sounds pretty sarcastic.......it's just been one of those weeks. Here's the bottom line. I'm not moving another ad. I'm not sending a single person a message letting them know that a post has been deleted. No exceptions. I try hard to provide requested features, look into any problems, help members if they need instruction on how to upload an ad or how to post a message, etc. I won't apologize for asking that our handful of rules be respected.
5 Buck Kanuck Posted February 25, 2015 #2 Posted February 25, 2015 That's Y U R The BOSS. U Have to do what U have to do.
SilvrT Posted February 25, 2015 #3 Posted February 25, 2015 Thanks Don, your sarcasm cracked me up and made my day! FWIW tho, you have every right to say what you said! We are not kids here and we should not have to be spoon fed or hand held.
MiCarl Posted February 25, 2015 #4 Posted February 25, 2015 Yeah, I've got similar problems on a much smaller forum I run. While I don't have classifieds, everyone still posts everything in the equivalent of the watering hole. I've got a couple people that are inclined to make damn fools of themselves. I've quit moderating their posts - I figure if they want to announce to the world they're not too sharp I'll just let them. We're playing in your house - your rules. Keep up the good work!
Flyinfool Posted February 26, 2015 #5 Posted February 26, 2015 Don, the vast majority of us try to follow the rules and really do appreciate all that you do for us. REALLY. Thank you for all of your effort that you put in for our enjoyment. As for that one member, They obviously have no respect for you or anyone else on this site. Don't worry about the one, the many are happy. The one probably did not even catch your sarcasm.
OrlinEngh Posted February 26, 2015 #6 Posted February 26, 2015 Don, I see nothing wrong in the way you feel, Delete the ad or post if its not in the place where it should be, if you can read you should know where to place it plain and simple. I have had emailed and asked where was the best place for a couple of things because I was new and wasnt sure. There must be alot of work and time that goes into this site and we shouldnt make it harder for you than what it has to be. I think that this is a great site with alot of great people and would hate to see it just up and go away because of a few that dont take the time to do things the correct way. Thanks for all of the work that you do for all of us. Orlin
cowpuc Posted February 26, 2015 #7 Posted February 26, 2015 """"Here's the bottom line. I'm not moving another ad. You do far more than "try hard" to accomplish the above - you have and continue to succeed at doing all the above and then some! Expecting us to be respectful and abide by the rules is not something you should ever feel like you need to apologize for, its the other way around Boss!! Sorry about the added work some of us have caused you (myself included) and the added frustrations of dealing with all this during an already dicey week.
rickardracing Posted February 26, 2015 #8 Posted February 26, 2015 Honestly after that remark that particular member made........if it were me, with my crappy attitude.....I would have deleted the ad AND that member and sent him a refund......prorated for time left. Don my friend, you handled it well. You and all of your efforts are truely appreciated.
XV1100SE Posted February 26, 2015 #9 Posted February 26, 2015 Since this thread is about selling things...can I list something for sale here?? LOL
Freebird Posted February 26, 2015 Author #10 Posted February 26, 2015 Folks.....I think he is OK. Maybe he was just having a bad day also. It happens to all of us. It's all good.
cowpuc Posted February 26, 2015 #11 Posted February 26, 2015 Folks.....I think he is OK. Maybe he was just having a bad day also. It happens to all of us. It's all good. Glad to hear that! Tell you guys one thing,, I think we are ALL going to be OK again as soon as this White Washing business is over and we can all ride to Don's MD, sit down by a camp fire and have some good old, down home, face to face motorcycle chat!! Think I may start early.. So,, now that we have this classified stuff all hammered out on the site,, I gotta ask,, are we gonna pull into MD and see your Harley sitting there with a for sale sign on it?
SilvrT Posted February 26, 2015 #13 Posted February 26, 2015 You do far more than "try hard" to accomplish the above - Maybe Don should change his nickname to AVIS ("we try harder")
cowpuc Posted February 26, 2015 #15 Posted February 26, 2015 Everything is for sale. I can't wait to see it! I also cannot WAIT to see your old bike that Yammers riding, Larrys new Slingshot AND, if Wild Bill shows up - I cant wait to see his new Indian.. Come to think of it,, I am may need an extra day just to see all the bikes!! Hey,, maybe we could have a show and tell time,, I have never been to a rally where that was done.. You know, where we have an introduction time where we follow each other around, introduce ourselves and our bikes at the same time!!! Just do it Don, come on,, you wont have anything else to do during that time!!! (wish I could have had a camera on your face when you read that last line)
Chaharly Posted February 26, 2015 #16 Posted February 26, 2015 Just wanted to add to everyones kind words here Freebird (I will only use people's names after I've met them) that these things are EXACTLY why I have NO PROBLEM paying my 12 dollars a year to be a member of my family on this site!. I'm probably one of the worst when it comes to posting things in the wrong spots here and the stuff you and the other moderators go through to keep this site running on all four (or two for you Snarley guys) cylinders amazes me. Keep up the good work and remember that EVERY boss can get a little irritated with his crew every now and again!!!
dingy Posted February 26, 2015 #17 Posted February 26, 2015 I'm so friggin glad I asked first !!! Gary
Yammer Dan Posted February 26, 2015 #18 Posted February 26, 2015 Boy I'm glad I've never done anything like this!!!
The Tooch Posted February 26, 2015 #19 Posted February 26, 2015 FOR SALE Freebird One over used and slightly abused Forum Administrator, has been known to go off on a rant now and again but all and all is mostly a good egg. Has missed fired once or twice, something to do with a Harley site which is not his normal standard of operation. Mostly plays well with others and doesn't allow anyone to make a mess in the sandbox. Has a sarcastic wit and a good eye for the ladies. (Just see wife for reference!) If interested PM him personally with and offer....but whatever you do.......don't tell him you saw the add here!
Angelo Posted February 26, 2015 #20 Posted February 26, 2015 I know it was a rant and not necessarily supposed to be funny, but I couldn't help but laugh. The forum I help Mod has just north of 100,000 members and it amazes me (though it shouldn't) how much hand holding a bunch of grown men require. Seems like every time you delete someone's post due to rules violations they get butt hurt and send you a message asking why you couldn't have just moved it for them. Glad to see its universal to all of these forums.
djh3 Posted February 26, 2015 #21 Posted February 26, 2015 Don I think I can relate to your woes. My wife is the staff member and as such coordinates 4 very large events with multiple volunteers. They have a problem and think she should drop whatever to work on their problem. But times that by 4 and 10-15 min here and there and the day is gone man. If I boo boo and put something in the wrong place a note "hey dummy thats not where it goes, move it or loose it" would work for me. If you took the 15 min to move and relist etc when would you have time to completely rebuild, reorganize and fine tune this neat little place we have. I think you did fine.
WildBill1 Posted February 26, 2015 #22 Posted February 26, 2015 Don't Hold Back Let It All Out Boss, this why we pay you the big bucks too put up with nuts like me and the others. Oh by the way great job and 1000 AT- Boys your way.
Marcarl Posted February 27, 2015 #23 Posted February 27, 2015 Love in not self centered, it gives and doesn't demand a return,,,, it says what can I give,, not what can I get. Love would have said: opps sorry boss, I'll repost that. Love was meant to rule this earth, but sadly we got in the way, so often times we screw up and go the way of 'get' rather than 'give' When we head for 'get' we'll more often than not end up at the wrong end of the discussion. Love also forgives, but that doesn't mean that the consequences aren't there, and those consequences we have to deal with to get back on track. Also sometimes we don't read as much as we should, don't pay enough attention to the rules posted and so get into hot water,,,,, well,, them's the breaks,, live and learn. Good work Mr. Freebird,,,, there are rules for a reason, and a reason for rules. You showed good judgment and also love,,, so carry on,,and if you need to rant at times,, that's ok as well.
Marcarl Posted February 27, 2015 #25 Posted February 27, 2015 Brings a whole new meaning to what I thought to be a deadbeat song...... thanks
