muffler interchangability?

Ok here's a question for the 1st gen experts. I've been told MK l & MKll's mufflers mount up differently. Also that the MK ll's can be " McGuivered". Anyone how what has to be done? The actual differences? Any & all bits of wisdom welcome.

be aware the mufflers have a rubber sandwich holding them. This is used to damp out the "vibes" that can fatigue the muffler tab.
