spear Posted February 18, 2015 #1 Posted February 18, 2015 Greetings all. Had my 2004 RSV serviced today. Only 48,000kms on the clock so it doesn't do much work. The mechanic said all was fine, but pointed out that the intake manifolds have developed hair-line cracks that will soon develop to go right through. He reckons they'll last two months until they need replacing. Anybody had any similar experiences? I'm off on a 1,500km three day ride in a month and I'm thinking of having them replaced prior to the ride. If not I think I'll just take a roll of gaffer tape as a back-up.
Freebird Posted February 18, 2015 #2 Posted February 18, 2015 I've seen many of them with those hairline cracks and seen them last for many years that way. They are just surface cracks and I think there is even a steel liner inside. I wouldn't worry about them.
spear Posted February 18, 2015 Author #3 Posted February 18, 2015 G'day boss. Thanks for the info. I'll rest (and ride) a lot easier. Great riding weather here at present. Temps around 35degC. Spear
Marcarl Posted February 18, 2015 #4 Posted February 18, 2015 Use a little liquid tape on the cracks if they worry you.
RedRider Posted February 18, 2015 #5 Posted February 18, 2015 I've had cracks in my intake boots for 80k+ miles. No worries. There is a steel liner between two coats of rubber. If you want to check, spray some carb cleaner on them when the bike is running. If the idle changes, then a crack is all the way through. Don't expect it to be a problem. RR
BlueSky Posted February 18, 2015 #6 Posted February 18, 2015 I replaced the ones on my Kawasaki because they had very visible cracks on the outside. When I removed the old ones, I found that none of the cracks went all the way through. So, my smelly opinion is that it is nothing to worry about.
JDaniel Posted February 18, 2015 #7 Posted February 18, 2015 I replaced them on my 99 RSV last year. The old ones were cracked but when I pulled them off and inspected them the cracks were just surface cracks. There is a metal liner inside of them.
bongobobny Posted February 19, 2015 #8 Posted February 19, 2015 There ya go Spear, a whole bunch of the same answers!!!
Bryon Posted March 12, 2015 #9 Posted March 12, 2015 My 96 Royal Star has 33000 miles and the cracks I found leaking gas can I patch the cracks temporarily ask I need to ride it a month before I can fixit
Du-Rron Posted March 12, 2015 #11 Posted March 12, 2015 My cracks are leaking gas I won't go there because it is too easy....... However, you gotta have a mighty nice vacuum leak on the carb boots if they are also spewing gas out of them. Might try some silicone sealer/adhesive on them.
spear Posted March 19, 2015 Author #12 Posted March 19, 2015 Sorry I haven't been back to thank y'all for the same replies. So - thank you. I head off tomorrow morning for a ride to the coast (350kms) to meet up with my sister and four brothers for our annual biker weekend get-together. This is year 12 and I fear it may well be the last time that we do it as we are all slowly drifter further apart on this great continent. I'll post some pics when I get back.
