H2O Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Having trouble with my '88 again. This time I am out of patience and time so I took it to a local, reputable shop that services older bikes. As I suspected, the carbs are worn out and in need of rebuilding. They're telling me the parts are about $800.00. I realize they're operating a business and I don't want to seem cheap, but does that sound within reason? They said the labor will be $350.00. Sounds backwards to me. Any advice? Thanks
Vonwolf Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 (edited) Carb rebuild parts while not cheap,I can't see them costing anywhere near that much, There are probably Special Carb Tuners who build race bikes that are worth that but that sounds kind of expensive, but I'm cheap and try to do things whether I know what I'm doing or not Edit: I did order the 16 Philips head cap screws used in the 4 mounting brackets on my carb, mine were stripped out, cut up and ugly. They wanted $88 for them, for 16 ordinary chrome cap screws not even original? I didn't by them, I got chrome hex head cap screws for about $26, so Yamaha does have rather high opinion of the value the put on their parts Edited February 14, 2015 by Vonwolf
Peder_y2k Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 How many miles on the bike? Pete in Tacoma WA USA
MiCarl Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 If they're replacing the slides with Yamaha parts that will explain a sizable chunk of the $800. The labor is more than reasonable, assuming they do it right. They should be billing for about 5 hours, so if their labor rate is $58/hour they're spot on.
H2O Posted February 14, 2015 Author Posted February 14, 2015 65k. Overall great condition. Shop owner says bike is in good condition but the carbs have the age problem and are just worn out. He's got them all apart for me to inspect this morning

I removed all the fairing for him. Thanks, I feel a little better knowing this. Really love my XVZ. I believe she has a lot of miles left Edited February 14, 2015 by H2O
MiCarl Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 If diaphragms are the problem you might consider trying to get them to repair the slides with diaphragms from Sirius. You'd have to pay them extra labor but in the end it'd cost you less and they'd probably make more profit. Another option is to have them get slides from K&L Supply. Exact same Mikuni part, but about half the price.

Peder_y2k Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 At 65K the carbs are not worn out. Worn out means the butterfly shaft is worn away to the point of unfixable leakage. The carbs just need some repair parts to freshen them up. Pete in Tacoma WA USA

If you replace the slides make sure you get the old ones back. Someone with a broken slide will be thrilled to get one, pin holes and all.

I checked with K&L and I could not find replacements. The Yamaha slides are $150.00 each. Going ahead with it. The bike still looks and rides great, and it's never failed us. yamagrl Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 if you are interested in doing the carbs yourself there is a good video here http://www.venturerider.org/forum/general-tech-talk/84030-dvd-1st-gen-motor-carb-rebuild-process-purchase-info.html . Here is a sample clip. I bought the videos ($20.00) and redid mine on my 84.
dna9656 Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Also you can buy a whole SET of carbs on ebay (that MIGHT need major surgery) for WAY less than what this guy is suggesting. I think he's got an anniversary trip planned and you've the sponsor....BTW Peder is THE MAN when it comes to these carbs. He lives over in the next town from me and has performed some magic on my carbs...Just sayin'.....there are a LOT of smarts here and lots of experience. I really like it here!
