The Tooch Posted February 13, 2015 #1 Posted February 13, 2015 Heading to Florida tomorrow morning need to get away from this bitter cold we are having right now. Got some U.S. Dollars for the week and it cost me $710.33 Can. to get $550. U.S. Not complaining cause it is, what it is! I just want at least some mild weather. I was was just thinking if anyone had the idea of coming North this summer for a vacation, or just out for a ride following the front wheel. You'd sure make your money go a little further if you crossed the border for a visit. The talk up here is our dollar will be down even lower by then. I may have to re-think my plans this summer. A weekend to Freebird's for MD in May, a week trip to Maine in June and the International in July. That's a lot of US bucks to buy, at a much higher rate then when I started planning it all. Might have to look into some of those Cowpuc discount camping spots, instead of motels.
djh3 Posted February 13, 2015 #2 Posted February 13, 2015 Hmm seems to be you got taken. I just checked a couple sites and the rate is 1.25 can to 1 usd.
The Tooch Posted February 13, 2015 Author #3 Posted February 13, 2015 I bought earlier in the week the rate was 1.29

We need to develop our own little camping area map where we can just pull in to each others yards and drop the tent.. Tweeks will tell ya,, I been saying it but oh no,, all I get is :rotf: Tooch,, ANYTIME you are in the area - FREE CAMPING! Just go to the members map and follow the pointy balloon.. If I happen to be home and not out perfecting my sneaky little camping in the bushes routine - I would be more than happy to teach ya everything I know about camping in ditches:178:
saddlebum Posted February 13, 2015 #5 Posted February 13, 2015 (edited) Camping is always my favorite mode of traveling. As long as the camping spots are well away from highways and trains. What I don't understand is Why when we are having some of the best winter weather we have had in years, you want to run and hide. Nice crisp dry cold instead of bone penetrating dampness.....Clean dry snow to play in instead of wet slush and mud. What ever happened to the kid in you? When my grandchildren are staying with us, as soon as they hear me stir upstairs they start pulling on there boots ....cause PaPa is up and that means playing outside in the snow, I am lucky if I even get to have a coffee first. But we do have fun a 2 year old kid a 3 year old kid And a 61 year old kid. Edited February 13, 2015 by saddlebum
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted February 13, 2015 #6 Posted February 13, 2015 I bought earlier in the week the rate was 1.29 my math.... all that it is.... seems that you got it @ about $0.78...... there may have been "service" charges. do you remember when "service" was what banks and shops provided
steamer Posted February 13, 2015 #8 Posted February 13, 2015 So where you going in Florida? What Brake Pad said. Where you going to be? Robin and me are heading down there next week. Seems like we are always following you around.
stickhandle2 Posted February 13, 2015 #9 Posted February 13, 2015 Tooch I hear ya brother, we are relooking our ride plans for this year. There is always the one trip we have to make over the border for if nothing else to get a couple bottles of Everclear for another batch or two of Tammies Apple Pie. I haven't camped in a few years but am really wanting to give it a try on the bike, I know the better half has already said a big NO to the camping thing, maybe it is something I have to try again on my own. For me it may be tough finding spots to carry some of the essentials, like a stove, coffee etc. Question to the campers, what do you carry with you when you camp on the bike.......my morning coffee is a must, guessing the small single burner stoves work ok with bike camping. Mike
saddlebum Posted February 14, 2015 #10 Posted February 14, 2015 (edited) I am like you, I like my morning coffee and there is nothing like a fresh brewed pot of coffee outdoors (forget instant I can't stand instant coffee). I have used the Svea 123 for all sorts of camping. I even take it ice fishing with me and use it out on the open ice to perk up a warm pot of coffee using an old fashioned percolator pot. I have had this stove since I started back packing at 12 years old and in almost 50 years it has never let me down. The thing I like most about it is it burns simple Coleman type camp fuel which is readily available at almost any variety, grocery or camping store as well as most gas stations. So even if you leave home without fuel or do like I do and carry it around almost constantly, you are pretty much guaranteed to find fuel somewhere. Where as most pressurized type fuel systems ( which may be a little easier to light or burn a little hotter) are not always so easy to find. When it comes to making coffee I pack a collapsible coffee strainer which packs up in my mess kit with my stove. or if I have a little extra space I will pack along an old fashioned coffee percolator pot with the internal basket and sight glass In case I want to make an entire pot of coffee. The percolator should have a pail type handle as well as the hand grip handles so you can hang it over an open fire as well as use it on the stove. There are a variety of ways of lighting it. I tend to use the hand warming method most times though not the quickest method. You simply fill the tank then open the valve. Next wrap your hands around the tank to warm it. after a bit the fuel starts to expand then dribble out the top orifice down the stem and fill the bowel at the base of the stem. close the valve and light the fuel at the base of the stem. Just before it goes out reopen the valve to light the burner. There are several other methods which you can find on u-tube. Here is one demo Edited February 14, 2015 by saddlebum
stickhandle2 Posted February 15, 2015 #11 Posted February 15, 2015 Thanks Ben, yup I used to love that first cup of coffee when we camped, funny it is also how I got back into using a percolator again for my coffee. The stove is the kind I was thinking of. Thanks again for the info. Mike

CaptainJoe Posted February 15, 2015 #13 Posted February 15, 2015 Gonna be in Minnesota for a week in July. I need to get my papers in order(passport) to cross the border into Canada.
Dragonslayer Posted February 16, 2015 #14 Posted February 16, 2015 Shoveling snow is not my idea of a vacation................. I like it down here where the snow melts before it hits the ground
Sailor Posted February 16, 2015 #15 Posted February 16, 2015 Sat out on the sundeck today. 72 in the shade. I kept spilling my beer as my right wrist kept twitching.
