Looks like a good bike and with that mileage, it should last you unless you ride as much as Puc!

Dont tell Puc but I'm aiming to beat him this year. Its definitely not gonna happen but it is a fair goal right? I definitely want one with low enough miles that I can still make my own!

Looks nice, But an 86 should not have a 1200 engine, it should be a 1300.

Most of these dealers know nothing about these bikes. Any easy way to tell if its the original motor?

It is a 1300. No Super Brace. Pics weren't good for me but with those miles you could make it your own. Less than 1000 per year?

How much sitting has it done? All the miles put on it in 86?

I would try to talk to P.O. The 86s are a nice bike. Most of the bugs worked out by then.

We're gonna go look at it tomorrow. Kind of hoping itll have a misfire and I can get it for cheaper. Those pretty much all had cbs and cruise control?

I also looked at the tech section and I checked out the list of known problems.

I just think that's a gorgeous bike

I don't think the price is bad if it looks really nice in person and everything works. You can't really tell how shiny and unscratched it might be from the photos.

I paid $3800 for my 89 last May that had 5,914 miles on it and is in pristine condition.

ill be a dog that's in iowa. that's about five hours from me. my 83 had 23000 miles on it when I got it. they sit a little taller than the new ones but they will go. hope its a good one

I had an 86 just like that. In fact it is the bike that I was on riding on the salt flats.

Great Bike, but it was too tall for me.

you'll love it.

Im just a little nervous about the age of it. Mechanically the age doesn't bother me, but I'm more worried about an ignition coil going bad on a trip:confused:

Hey Cha,, THAT IS GORGEOUS!! Definitely a note worthy piece..

Unless you just have the bug to drive there to inspect the bike, you may wanna ask them if they would send some more pics to you. Call them and tell them that you are a serious buyer and that you just need some more info to go on..

I would ask for closeups of the engine - especially the gasket areas where the valve covers meet the jugs. At its age, if the valve clearances have never been done in it, those gaskets will probably show cracking.. Also, look the jugs over for traces of leaking anti-freeze or oil stains.. Get a couple of shots showing the dash board and with radio/cb area's. THen you can see if that equipment is stock..

I would also ask for a shot of the underside of the bike, the exhaust collector included.. You don't want a bike that has been treated like Tweeks,, pipes all banged up and stuff.. :big-grin-emoticon: If you see stuff in the pics cause you pause, there is nothing wrong with mentioning it on the phone and testing the dealers flexability in pricing.. If it looks as sharp in the close ups as it does in the distant shots, you can just haul butt, get there, start it up - spit check the pipes to make sure she is hitting on all four,, haul out 17 crisp All Amercian Franklins and see if they will take it.. I love this stuff,, wish I could join ya!!

She is a beauty,, yep,, lots and lots of space on that spotless gem to hang stickers!! :big-grin-emoticon:

Oh yea,, about this keepin up with Puc,, pack ur bags and ya'll better start gettin use to living on Rattle Snake and hoppers cause SUMMERS COMING!! :stickinouttounge:

That would be less than 5,000 miles a year if it was 121,000 miles. I am always a little suspicious of a 29 year old bike having that low mileage. At 21,000 miles, that is only averaging 724 miles a year.

I totally see where your coming from Rand but, I cant tell you how many bikes I have taken in thru the years that have fallen victim to what this 21k bike may have fallen into.. I KNOW its a horrible thought but there are a lot of people out there who get involved in this sport that you and I treasure and get out as quickly as they got in. They buy a bike, ride it for a few miles, dont really care for the inconvenience of having messed up hair, dirty clothes or facing the dangers we face and the bike ends up sitting under a tarp.

I know it sounds NUTS but I am telling ya bro,, I have seen it over and over again!!

I always had a big problem trying to explain to owners of such bikes why I couldnt give them top dollar for their 30 year old bike when it looks like brand new BUT the motor hadnt been turned over in 30 years and the air cleaner was filled with a mouse nest!!

Dont get me wrong, I think your warning about being suspicious around this type of purchase is rock solid for many reasons!! It is real easy to buy into a really good looking bike that can turn out to be a money pit,, this can happen even with one of our beloved Ventures..

It should have all the Goodies. C B, Class , Radio, Intercom and a 1300 engine. You could act a little disappointed that its not the 1200 which you heard was the better engine (not true close to same if tuned right) Tell them it needs fork brace, progressive springs and shield if any scratches. Look for rust in tank. Try to convince them brake lines that old are shot. And try to convince them sitting so much could be big problem. Good Luck!!
