cowpuc Posted January 31, 2015 #51 Posted January 31, 2015 Hey Charharly, I sure hope you are getting the information you need that will help you decide what type of bike you should get next out of all this. ... I feel like I'm more confused now than ever hahaha. So is it just me puc or does the V 4 just feel better in a 1200cc Speaking about being confused,, someone like YammerDan would be the one to address that question to CJ cause I think he has actually spent some time on both.. Just thinking out loud here,, if we have a hard time finding that feller I am sure there are many others around this joint with just as much experience with both motors.. 1985 Yamaha Venture. Removable bags...larger trunk. Well would ya look at that!! I dont think I have ever seen one Don!! Is that the same trunk as on the 86 - 93 and does it have the same seat/trunk backrest as the 83/84 I wonder...

Yeah it has a beautifully tailored Brown seat that's the same as. The 83s. The 86 and newer felt harder to me. I've briefly owned all three. 83 85 and an 88. I owned the 85 the longest and I let it slip out of my fingers Lol My 83 didn't have cruise or a cb. The MKII had both

As the Wizard Of Oz said,, WELL BUST MY BRITCHES,, WHY DIDNT CHA SAY SO... \ So, to answer your original question,, indeed,, the ORIGINAL 1200cc Venture motors were far superior in every way!! Fasterrr,, smootherrr and even better sounding!!!!
Brenner Posted February 1, 2015 #54 Posted February 1, 2015 You guys in the states are very lucky. I am not trying to start something but here in Canada if I ran a car tire on the back of a bike and had an accident my insurance company would not pay out and I would be cancelled. It never ceases to amaze me the difference in price between Canadian ( way higher) and US ( so much cheaper) insurance and the US being able to alter their bikes and still be covered. I wish I could pull that off over here as one of the questions and stipulations is that my bike is not altered or heavily modified.

And just think Bren,, we are only operating at about 1/100th of level of freedom we could be operating at.. Technically we should be able to take a switch to our kids when they do wrong, let em say the pledge of allegiance in school, run truck tires on our bikes, ride across the desert with no helmet on and a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the front while singing the National Anthem at the top of our lungs just daring those bad news terrorist thugs to cross the line into our country BUT,,, we try to hold some back so our neighbors to the North dont think we are totally crazy

Brenner Posted February 1, 2015 #60 Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) Puc I am glad you see the differences I was referring to. I like the 85 as it is slightly different. Even read the ad Freebird posted and how that was the year of the choke change. I had a choice of rebuilding the 84 or the 85 and the 85 was a little more unique so I took that route. I have side cover for an 84 and they are smaller without the vents. You are right it is as I like to think as somewhat one year thing. The best of both MK's? Mine will be a mixed breed but not hacked, all yamaha parts except the progressive springs. Maybe your next will be an 85? LOL.... Edited February 2, 2015 by Brenner
Yammer Dan Posted February 1, 2015 #61 Posted February 1, 2015 My 85 is the most comfortable ride out on the road but was my 1st time dealing with boards. My biggest problem with the boards?? Couldn't look down and see kickstand and I was always pulling out with it down!! Guess I had made habit for a lot of years of looking down to see that it was up!! 1300 not more power. It is hard to tell the difference from a good running 1200 and a 1300. But that being said I was just getting my 1st 1200 (Blue Beast) to give all she could give when that Crackhead flattened her!! She would scoot when she was right!! My 1300 (Brown Sugar) likes to pick em up and scoot herself as known by a few on this site. But being older and wiser I don't ride like that anymore as I have informed the Warden.

You can bet your butt that I'm not gonna point out that cartire to my agent either

It had the glowing green gem with the beautifully written out "venture cruise" on the MKII they added an external cruise system that just looked gaughty. I think they made the 85 for the people and definitely made it my personal favorite. And yeah puc I've had my eye on that one in indiana. Now I'm just trying to find one with less miles
Sailor Posted February 1, 2015 #64 Posted February 1, 2015 No bike will do everything. Decide what type of riding you want to do then shop around for the best bike you can afford.

It is ser# 5000+ so it is after the 2nd gear issue was fixed. It needs a TCI but I have one that I am running on my 83 that came off of an MKII, but I still have my 83 TCI I use as a spare. I had planned on fixing it up, but with as many projects that I have, it is just not real high on my priority list. I had not planned on selling it but right now it is more in my way. I think it has about 57,000 miles on it. Randy

friesman Posted February 2, 2015 #67 Posted February 2, 2015 My 85 was still more fun to ride and easier to handle and if I had the money I would still have it for the quick runs and twisties, and keep the RSV for the long highway runs. Brian THe trunk on that looks like the trunk of an 83 or 84 G1 Venture.....but a nice looking bike in that ad. Just looked on craigslist. This link looks like a deal but too far away. 2006 Yamaha Royal star Venture Tour deluxe 1300
Brenner Posted February 2, 2015 #68 Posted February 2, 2015 Chaharly, from what I have seen the green cruise light is also found on the 84 but I cannot comment on the 83 as I personally have not seen one in person. Friesman the trunk in that pic is an 85 and to my knowledge fits to 1993. Look carefully and note the reflector strip on the rear. My 85 project has a cracked lower trunk so I found one on ebay that was off a 93 that was dealer replaced under warranty for a small 1" crack in its dealer box and it fit perfectly. I had to install the locks and mounting hardware from the 1985 as it is one year only large trunk and being removable differs from the 86-93 mounts which bolt to the bike and the 83-84 removable mounts are different and mount in a different location. Quickest way to identify the larger tour trunk is the rear reflector.
