Brenner Posted January 22, 2015 #1 Posted January 22, 2015 Perhaps a dumb question but I have not owned or rode one of these bikes before and have no manual to reference what I am looking for. I was going over the wiring on my project today 1985 xvz12 and hooked up the new gear position switch and noticed something odd. Now I do not know if it is normal or messed since I converted it to a second gen gear swap and switched the shift drum. My bike shows second gear in neutral, first, and second, but does work correctly in third, fourth, and fifth. Even the neural light works correctly. Is this normal or do I have a cmu concern? I tried another switch and even manually grounded the terminals and I get the same result. Am I concerned for nothing or do I have a problem?
flyday58 Posted January 22, 2015 #2 Posted January 22, 2015 I did the gear position switch change when I bought a 41R harness by mistake for my '83. Don't have any problems, but I haven't been into the motor either, so haven't swapped shift drums. Richard
bongobobny Posted January 22, 2015 #3 Posted January 22, 2015 Misadjustment of the gear selector switch?? Oops, I see you grounded the individual contacts with the same results. Sounds like a logic problem in the CMU then...
Venturous Randy Posted January 22, 2015 #4 Posted January 22, 2015 I pulled a 1st gen and a 2nd gen shift drum and checked and they look identical on that end. I suspect you have a CMU or wiring problem. Randy
Brenner Posted January 23, 2015 Author #5 Posted January 23, 2015 Thanks to all and yes it looks like it is the cmu, dang another item I need to find. I checked the harness and for short to ground and all is well. Even if I disconnect the switch it still says second gear. It is a livable concern but after going through all this work on this project bike I cannot accept anything but a fully functioning bike. I am supposed to pick up another parts bike saturday and I will try the cmu from it.
djh3 Posted January 24, 2015 #6 Posted January 24, 2015 so how come the 2nd gen dont have a position indicator.
Venturous Randy Posted January 24, 2015 #7 Posted January 24, 2015 so how come the 2nd gen dont have a position indicator. I suspect it is like the 83 where the pin only contacts for neutral. This lights the neutral light and allows starting with the clutch out. In 84 they went to the six different locations noted. Randy
Marcarl Posted January 24, 2015 #8 Posted January 24, 2015 Got that in a box of parts as well,,, could work for ya!
Brenner Posted January 25, 2015 Author #9 Posted January 25, 2015 Man oh man I am in the need of one. I gotta get up to see you when you are available.

Trader Posted January 25, 2015 #11 Posted January 25, 2015 Looks like the party is at Carl's!!! Don't worry, I posted it on the internet so there should only be a few thousand show up!:yikes:
OutKast Posted January 25, 2015 #12 Posted January 25, 2015 in reference to the second gen, it also pics up 5th to light the overdrive light.
bongobobny Posted January 29, 2015 #13 Posted January 29, 2015 so how come the 2nd gen dont have a position indicator.Cheaper, Better, Faster (choose 2)
djh3 Posted January 30, 2015 #14 Posted January 30, 2015 So it sounds like it is simply the transmitter that is different. So possibly if you had a display panel, say 5 led lights, then the first gen transmitter should work. It must pick up 4th also as it will allow the cruise to be rengaged.
