86Royale Posted March 23, 2008 #1 Posted March 23, 2008 I'd like to hard wire the power source for my XM, and i've searched a couple ways to do it that look straight forward. My question is, the power cord that I have now indicates 5vdc, is there some sort of resistor in the cigarette adapter that lowers the voltage to the unit, or is that just a minimum and will run off 12vdc no problem? Thanks Joe
Freebird Posted March 23, 2008 #2 Posted March 23, 2008 No, you do not want to hook it to 12 volts. What I did was to buy a wired 12 volt receptacle like an extension or something. You can get them at most any Walmart, Auto parts store, etc. I then connected it inside the fairing, plugged the XM power unit into it, put a couple of wraps of tape around it so that it wouldn't come unplugged.
Mariner Fan Posted March 24, 2008 #3 Posted March 24, 2008 86Royale, Hoon hardware sells a hardwire cord for the Roady XM. It is designed to decrease voltage to either 5 volts or 6 volts depending on your needs. A little spendy but I have one and it works fine. http://www.hoonhardware.com/RoadyHolder/roadyholder.htm
86Royale Posted March 24, 2008 Author #4 Posted March 24, 2008 Thanks guys, just what I needed to know.
LASER917 Posted March 25, 2008 #5 Posted March 25, 2008 Or you can go to Radio Shack and get a 7805A 5 VDC regulator IC. 1 leg goes to 12 VDC, one to ground and the other is 5 VDC out. Priced at around $2.00
seforeman Posted March 25, 2008 #6 Posted March 25, 2008 The folks at www.myradiostore.com also sell a hard wire kit for 17.99. Works great. But there is a large black box (3" X 1.5" X 1.25") that is with it that needs to be attached under the fairing or on the side of the battery. Stu
