My better half wants to see Gulf Shores, AL and New Orleans the 3rd week of January. I see their average high is 62 that time of year which is fine compared to what we'll have here in Wisconsin! What suggestions does anybody have for scenic rides, good eats etc in these two regions?

you have the casino's about 90 miles west of gulf shores.... i think it's hwy 10 that goes along the coast from mobile to NOLA...

Actually it's hwy 90 that runs along the beach and casino's all the way from Alabama to Nawlins. Nice beach ride...done it about 100 times. Be safe.

Just run the coastal roads in each direction from Gulf Shores. Nice scenic rides. I agree with the comment about New Orleans being a toilet. Should have saved the gas for another ride. LOL Taking the Ferry across Mobile Bay is neat. Good way to see oil rigs and such up close. Might even see dolphins... but not sure about that time of year.

Close to GS and a quick ride is Gulf State Park and take a ride around Shelby Lake. Also close and over the intercostal bridge on 59 and to the right is Lu Lu's restaurant on the waterway and can be seen from the big bridge on 59. Lu Lu is Jimmy Buffet's sister and it is an interesting place and pretty good food. Go West for a short ride to Ft. Morgan for a tour and maybe ride the ferry to Dolphin Island, could be a day trip if you take the ferry. Up the bay is The Grand Hotel at Point Clear, stop walk the grounds and visit the pier. More north up the bay is the Fairhope Municipal Pier, nothing special but a nice ride. Then go East on 32 and before Cowpen Creek just south of 32 is Big Daddy's for lunch on the water, rustic. More East as in north of GS is Barber Marina east of Wolf Bay and North of the intercostal. It has a Stonehenge replica some dinosaurs, a very pretty marina and some really fine sweeping curves going in and back out with little traffic, highly recommend this. Close to that is Pirates Cove Restaurant on Roberts Bayou, very casual place but good for lunch or just a beer or a break with a view. A must do is from GS go East along the beach to the Flora-Bama on the state line, famous place for many reasons. Continue for a full day trip to West Pensacola onto the Navy Base back entrance and visit the Naval Aviation Museum, a really fine place to spend several hours. Entrance is free but the movie is not but see it anyway. They also have a nice light house you can visit and a view of Pensacola pass into the Gulf. The museum is also highly recommended.

If you go to FL, The Naval air museum is a must if you plan right you can see the angels practice. Fort Pickens on Pensacola beach is cool then you can take the beach road to Navarre. then you can take the Gulf Rd. to Eglin AFB to visit their armament museum. Biloxi MS has some casinos but we go to the Beau Rivage it is very nice and the buffet is good.

US 90 from Pascagoula to Waveland in Ole Miss sees lots of bikers all times of the year. Saw four trikes yesterday in Ocean Springs, westbound. The major bridges are new since Katrina, and the highway has been repaved most, if not all of the way to the Louisiana line. St Michael Catholic Church in east Biloxi survived Camille and Katrina and has beautiful stained glass windows from floor to ceiling. It's worth a look, it's a round church with a roof shaped like a seashell. Also known as the Fisherman's Church.

Most restaurants are chains and big-box since the hurricane, and my family is on a gluten-free diet so we don't eat out much. Sorry I can't help there.
