hipshot Posted March 22, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2008 i finally got the flywheel off, no problems, after you locate the correct bolts! now , is where it gets "different". the pins and rollers, all seem to be in excellent shape. the 3 allen bolts , that hold the clutch to the back of the fly wheel, are shot! all three, were "finger tight".and had been rubbing the internal portion of the flywheel. they were all "dimpled ", on the thread end, to secure them in place, but only ONE, was not ruined.i am going to attempt to attach pics, and then , i ask EVERYONE"S opinion. is this a "fairly common", problem, or am i just "special". seems that everyone else has these "easy fix",problems, EXCEPT ME!!! oh, in the third pic, you can see that the "clutch weight/plate, is cleanly broken! Do a good job of " Stakeing" them, and use " Lock tite " Replace All the Parts !!!! Is that a Crack I see on the Clutch Unit ?? YES george. the plate is broken into , in two places! i have a complete new starter clutch, but the three bolts may be difficult to locate! also wondering if i need to polish the inside of the flywheel, where the clutch fits. it has "visible " scars, from the loose bolt heads, where they rubbed against it. any one with a thought on this? gonna re-install the works, tomorrow, if i can find the correct bolts! just jt

bill p Posted March 23, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 23, 2008 You may be special , but I too just replace my clutch ass . Same thing 2 of the screws loose and the 3rd was barley tight. Be sure to use loctite on them when reinstalling them. And stake them this will keep them from backing out should they loosen again . Mine too was cracked looked like yours. The marks on the flywheel will have no effect on the working of the ass. I found the hardest part of the job was getting the gasket off the cover. I did not want to pull the wires out of the cover so I had to work on it attached to the bike. All is well now and starts just fine. GigaWhiskey Posted March 23, 2008 Share #10 Posted March 23, 2008 Try Fastenal for the bolts http://www.fastenal.com/web/locations.ex There look to be a few locations down in your part of texas.
Squeeze Posted March 23, 2008 Share #11 Posted March 23, 2008 Hi, these 3 Bolts are M8 with 25 mm long at 10.9 Grade. Please don't use the standard 8.8 Grade. Other than this, the Damage is nothing special. That's happening quite often. I would replace everything including the 72th Wheel. Then used Loctite on the Threads and stake the Ends of the Bolts. If you have a Lathe, you can buy M10 Bolts turn the Heads down to 13mm to fit into the Clutch Housing, bore and tap the Flywheel with M10 and you should doing this the last Time on your Bike. P.S. If you can feel the Scratches on the Flywheel, it would be better to flatten these out. Not as far as polishing goes, but the Rollers should be able to move without catching anything under Way. GeorgeS Posted March 23, 2008 Share #14 Posted March 23, 2008 Deffinatly " Replace " the Bolts !!!! I simply ordered them, with the other New Parts. Did you take Note of the Factory "Stakeing " I am of the opinion that they simply did a lousy job of Staking. I double Staked, mine, and I used the Strongest Lock Tite. A few folks said this was not a good idea, But I decided to use the Strongest Loc tite. Call around to a few dealers, they might have the Bolts In Stock. As I assume they are probaly a Stock Part on many different Yamaha Bikes. Assumeing you can't find them anyplace else
mbrood Posted March 23, 2008 Share #15 Posted March 23, 2008 Another benefit of changing parts... Note that the NEW springs and spring cups are LONGER... the parts near the ruler are original out of the bike... the lower ones are the "replacements". All three "original" springs were exactly the same length, but shorter than the new ones. Also... the right end of the cups (where the spring fits)... on mine... had a FLAT end and had chips and nicks around the edges and one of the cups had a nick that seized in the bronze (?) clutch housing. These NEW cups have a BEVEL at the right end!!!! http://bergall.org/temp/venture/starter/springs-a.jpg http://bergall.org/temp/venture/starter/springs-b.jpg And here's the end on the originals... the one that seized is on the right... http://bergall.org/temp/venture/starter/starter%20clutch3.jpg http://bergall.org/temp/venture/starter/springs-b.jpg

Dan dan, unless you are having problems with your starter, i wouldn't bother with it. mine got to a point that it would rattle and clatter, and NOT engage! i had no alternative, but to replace the whole starter clutch assembly. didn't see any point in ordering a bunch of small parts, and STILL, not have everything i needed. just jt.
