almariders Posted December 11, 2014 #1 Posted December 11, 2014 Rear tire went flat the other day so I put the jack underneath and Proceeded to pull the rear tire and wheel from the bike which I have done many times before as I have owned 5 different Ventures from 1963 to the current 1999. Took the 4 nuts that hold the rear drive shaft and removed it. Replaced the rear tire and reinstalled the drive shaft the same way I have always done it. Put everything back together and now the trans is locked in neutral can not shift to any other gear. Does anybody any idea what I might have done wrong and how to fix it. Any ideas would be great Thanks
Flyinfool Posted December 11, 2014 #2 Posted December 11, 2014 Can you spin the rear wheel? while it is jacked up? Does it make weird noises when you do? When you put it back together did you miss the front spline with the drive shaft?
almariders Posted December 11, 2014 Author #3 Posted December 11, 2014 Yes it does make weird noises when I turn the wheel by hand, don't think I missed the u joint splines but I guess it's a possiblity
Freebird Posted December 11, 2014 #4 Posted December 11, 2014 I will almost guarantee that is what you did. Been there and done that. Easy to do and it sounds exactly like that is what has happened.
MikeWa Posted December 12, 2014 #5 Posted December 12, 2014 +1 on missed splines. Use the access hole in the front of the driveshaft housing to help line things up. Mike
almariders Posted December 16, 2014 Author #6 Posted December 16, 2014 Thanks for all the tips, and yes it was a case of miss alignment of the splines. peeked thru inspect hole on top of the swing arm and used a screw driver to help hold the joint in place, then verified it was in place by turning joint with screw driver and seeing gears in rear move. Never had that much trouble with alignment before, but it is back together and running fine Thanks again to everyone
