BigLenny Posted December 2, 2014 #1 Posted December 2, 2014 This is an off the wall question, but Imma ask it anyway. Why do some websites end in .com while other websites end in .org? Did the .com world get filled up with sites or something? Or is it cheaper to have a website that ends in .org? Just my pea sized brain wondering.
Sylvester Posted December 2, 2014 #2 Posted December 2, 2014 Duhh, I don't know. Be nice to know though.
tz89 Posted December 2, 2014 #3 Posted December 2, 2014 And the internet was without form and void. And Al Gore said let there be light and information. And Al Gore separated the sources of light and information into commercial sources to be designated .com and (nonprofit) organizations to be designated .org and one ring to rule them all .gov And he saw that it was good and he rested. Now days absent the beneficial hand of the Al Gore Pandora's Box has been opened and there are now all manner of dot endings too many for even dot gov to understand And lo though many prophesize chaos It has not yet been written How the internet shall end.

MiCarl Posted December 3, 2014 #7 Posted December 3, 2014 .com, .gov, .org etc. are called top level domains. Theoretically .com is commercial, .gov is government, .org is nonprofit and .net is the networking people...... In reality most of them aren't restricted. Somebody already has BigLenny.com. BigLenny.net, BigLenny.co, BigLenny.us and BigLenny.org can each be had for less than $10/year.
Freebird Posted December 3, 2014 #8 Posted December 3, 2014 I actually own venturerider.org, venturerider.com and venturerider.net. If you type in any of those, you will get here.
MiCarl Posted December 3, 2014 #9 Posted December 3, 2014 I actually own venturerider.org, venturerider.com and venturerider.net. If you type in any of those, you will get here. Isn't that what happens: You almost collect the whole set and they release hundreds more.......
Freebird Posted December 3, 2014 #10 Posted December 3, 2014 Yep...then they try to sell you .biz, .us, .everything else. It never ends. I think that those three are the most important though.
