Wanting to start getting parts together for the brake upgrade to MKII forks and R1 calipers. Looking on ebay, there are a lot of R1 calipers available, but is there any particular year calipers that I want? I am also planning on delinking, so what do I need to do about front master? Do I need to go to a 14mm master and if I do, what am I looking for?

I did the upgrade on my '83, but kept the brakes linked. Same master, and the difference in braking power was amazing out of just the one caliper. The type of R1 or R6 calipers you'll need to pick up are those that use horizontal bolt fasteners. The new style uses a vertical fastener and is more 'block' looking.

Jack, how were you able to mount the R6/R1 calipers to the '83? Did you swap the forks for a MKII forks?

Yep.... I needed to use the MKII rotors as well... Put them on the '83 wheels. Also swapped out the Progressive Springs from the '83's to the set of '86 forks.

Randy, Squeeze maintains that 1999-2003 YZF R1 calipers and 1997-2001 YZF R6 calipers are assured to work.

In my research, I have discovered that some FJR1300 calipers (2003-2005) should work as well as calipers from 2001-2005 FZ1.

Rick Butler says that the front calipers from a 2004 Road Star are also good.

Squeeze also says that the 14mm master cylinder is, while not NEEDED, a very good upgrade if one wishes to take advantage of the R1/R6 calipers.
