Pete1952 Posted November 22, 2014 #1 Posted November 22, 2014 Hello, I am new to this forum and thanks for welcoming me. I need some advice, my 87 Venture engine is somewhat stuck, I cannot roll the engine a complete revolution no can I get it into any lower gear than 3rd.
Venturous Randy Posted November 22, 2014 #2 Posted November 22, 2014 OK, first of all, welcome to the forum. Can you give us a little history as in did this happen all at once? How long have you had the bike? Did it lock up while you were riding it? Have you put it on the center stand and moved the rear wheel while trying to shift it? Did you take the round cover off the engine on the left side and put a socket on the nut and try to move the crank? If you put a socket and bar on the crank nut, when crank stops moving, is it sudden stop? OK, here are a few things to think about and maybe we can help out a little better. RandyA
bongobobny Posted November 22, 2014 #3 Posted November 22, 2014 Sounds initially like a transmission issue or shifter issue but might be an engine issue like a dropped valve or?? I would start with pulling the driveshaft out to eliminate the rear differential as the problem...
MiCarl Posted November 22, 2014 #4 Posted November 22, 2014 Or it could be hydro locked from a stuck float. We need more information about the history on this motorcycle.
Pete1952 Posted November 23, 2014 Author #5 Posted November 23, 2014 Thanks, I appreciate the help. I just purchased this bike from a member. I do not know any history except that the seller said he bought it with the problem. I can rotate the crankshaft almost one full rotation. The crank will get hard to move about half way but will continue with some force. When it stops it stops solid.
Pete1952 Posted November 23, 2014 Author #6 Posted November 23, 2014 Floats are not stuck, plugs are out.
Pete1952 Posted November 23, 2014 Author #7 Posted November 23, 2014 Can the oil pan on 88 venture be removed with engine in frame.
Pete1952 Posted November 23, 2014 Author #8 Posted November 23, 2014 Thanks, I appreciate the help. I just purchased this bike from a member. bongobobny Posted November 23, 2014 #9 Posted November 23, 2014 I still think the problem could be a drive train issue! Pull the rear tire off, remove the differential and pull out the driveshaft first and see if anything changes...
Marcarl Posted November 23, 2014 #10 Posted November 23, 2014 I still think the problem could be a drive train issue! Pull the rear tire off, remove the differential and pull out the driveshaft first and see if anything changes... That would be my approach. Hey Bobby, we agree for once!!
Venturous Randy Posted November 23, 2014 #11 Posted November 23, 2014 I suspect you have a cylinder that got rusty from getting water in it. That is why I asked if it stopped suddenly, or would still move some. You may have to take the carbs and manifolds off so you can look down into the top of the valves. If there has been water in it, you will see a lot of crud on top of the valves. RandyA
Pete1952 Posted November 24, 2014 Author #12 Posted November 24, 2014 Ok, engine out of bike, bottom pan off, rod stuck in side of block through water jacket. I guess it was not a good buy, now need replacement engine.
Pete1952 Posted November 24, 2014 Author #13 Posted November 24, 2014 OK, engine out of bike, block cracked, rod through water jacket.
Venturous Randy Posted November 24, 2014 #14 Posted November 24, 2014 OK, engine out of bike, block cracked, rod through water jacket. This may be a good option, but you will have to hurry. http://www.ebay.com/itm/141471619425?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT RandyA
Pete1952 Posted November 24, 2014 Author #15 Posted November 24, 2014 OK i am high bidder and watching.
Venturous Randy Posted November 24, 2014 #17 Posted November 24, 2014 OK i am high bidder and watching. I was thinking about bidding on it, but for me, the pickup round trip is a bit much. You are much closer and I hope it works out for you. RandyA
Venturous Randy Posted November 25, 2014 #19 Posted November 25, 2014 That did not work either. Yeah, it went for $237.50 with five bids and no I did not bid on it. I tend to be a last second bidder and will list my maximum bid that I am willing to pay. If it goes for more than that, then I don't feel like I lost out on anything. Just curious, did you do more than the one bid? I started to call you earlier, but you did not have your phone number in your profile. RandyA
Pete1952 Posted November 25, 2014 Author #20 Posted November 25, 2014 I bid several times, but was not quick enough
Pete1952 Posted November 29, 2014 Author #22 Posted November 29, 2014 Ok, bought an engine that must be overhauled. I understand that you can improve the performance by doing vmax cams, rejetting the carb, what are the facts and what do I need.
madirishman13 Posted November 29, 2014 #23 Posted November 29, 2014 First suggestion spend 12 bucks and join the mayhem n chaos.....best 12 bucks I ever spent....And welcome.
Venturous Randy Posted November 29, 2014 #24 Posted November 29, 2014 What makes you think it must be overhauled? RandyA
Pete1952 Posted November 29, 2014 Author #25 Posted November 29, 2014 It has a lot of miles , more than one oil leak
