On old site if you went to the home page, it showed all the posts from every forum, starting with the most recent.

Is there a place to see this now?

Was kinda nice as you didn't specifically have to choose a forum.

New posts is close but isn't pulling in all the forums...

example didn' pull in my thread on "Things to carry in a motorcycle camper" from the VentureRider Campers forum.

I see it.

I think it doesn't show your own thread to you until someone else posts to it (in the New Posts list for example)

I could be wrong tho, I was once before... :starz:

I don't know if it does or not. You can click on "My Search Links" in the small menu bar at the top though, just below the larger Navbar. It has links to your posts, your threads, unanswered threads, etc. Explore my boy...EXPLORE. :)

Yeah, If you get on the new posts link for a thread you started it doesn't show up.

After someone posts to it does.

when you come back to new posts later in the day, if no one made an additional post to it , it wont show up.

Guess cause it's not a new "to you" post.

Need to explore some more...

Maybe it's me not knowing where to go, but after I make a post or reply, I was used to seeing it pop up on the next click of NEW posts. Now, I can't find anything I have written, as well as not being able to see who else is online and offline. Please advise. It's been bumming me out quite honestly, because I always enjoyed knowing who is online as well as reading up to date posts from the others. Suggestions and advice would help.

It's the same answer really for both of you. At the top of the page there is a large menu bar that has links to "What's New", "Articles", "Forum" and etc. Just under that is a small bar that has "New Posts", "Private Messages", etc. On the far right end of that one it says "My Search Links". Click on that and you will find links to your own posts and threads.

At the bottom of the page is a block that shows who is online.

Not sure exactly what you mean. We already have the area "links to classifieds, craigslist and eBay. Links to classifieds are automatically generated when you post an ad in the classifieds. Links to craigslist and eBay are usually just posted there. What are you asking for? There are also automatic Ebay links to Venture related products on the home (articles) page.

I just started a new thread called "Stop the Junk..." before I saw this thread. The ads are clogging up the new posts and I just mark everything as read and leave the forum. If I'm missing something let me know.

I think we need a "sticky" on how to adjust a bunch of these settings. I am on here on a mobile more than anything else, it is not as easy to maneuver as the old site so will likely not be on as much. My V-Strom site still uses the old format so when mobile will spend more time there I think.

I plan to do a sticky pretty soon, just been too busy getting everything working. About finished so will do a writeup pretty soon. As for the mobile, have you tried switching to "Mobile" style in the bottom left corner or using TapaTalk?

Just received a notification and when I click on it, I get a message that my "support" expires 08-08-2015. If I click on it I can get to mail on the left menu. Will the "support expires" message always be there?

Posted

It should be gone now. Just experimenting with a way to notify people that their subscription is about to expire. Many people tell me that they never get the email. Usually because some providers, Yahoo being the worse, puts them in the spam folder. I hope that this way will enable more people to see it before they login and find that they are no longer able to post. I have it set now for 14 days before expiration.

Don,

I write this, in hopes to tweak, the fine job you've already done to this site.

It is in no way ment to be viewed as criticism.

What's New every post, to a thread appears with a time stamp. Instead of, every thread that has been updated. This creates a huge volume of data being displayed that one has to scroll thru. It doesn't take long, maybe a couple hours?, till something is so far down the page, that no one is going to look at it, resulting in people missing threads entirely.

New Posts lasts no longer than 48hrs. then it's gone. Some people get on here once or twice a week. again, resulting in people missing threads entirely.

Recent Activity Widget lasts no longer than a few minutes, then it's gone.

My point is, people are going to miss threads, unless of course they go into a specific forum.

I guess one could throw everything into the Watering Hole, but, that would defeat the purpose of forums section.

Recent activity has been updated to show newest posts. It was showing most active threads.

As for the rest, it is cookie based. Are you logging out? If you log out, it clears all your cookies and doesn't know what you have or have not read. Here is an explanation of how it works. I am using option 3.

This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.

  1. Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.
  2. Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.

This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
  3. Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.

This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.

As for throwing everything into the watering hole, I don't understand at all how that would help. The watering hole is already over used and that is why so many things that are posted there end up being several pages back very quickly. People really need to get out of that habit. There seems to be a thought that if you post something in the watering hole that more people will see it. Well if people used the correct areas, everybody would quickly learn that is not true and items in the correct areas would remain on the first page longer. Not only that but the watering hole is pruned automatically from time to time so technical information posted there is gone forever after they are pruned. I'm not going to take the time to manually go through every post in the watering hole to determine what is worth saving. That would be very time consuming and I should not be expected to do that when people should learn to just post in the appropriate areas. We have always been lax here about that because I didn't want to be one of those forums that is always fussing at people for posting in the wrong areas but I think we have been TOO lax.

I just looked and I guess I just don't understand what you are saying. If I click on "New Posts" in the small (lower menu bar...left end) it shows all new posts since my last visit and all threads that contain posts that were there before my last visit but I haven't read. I have a lot of those because all posts are emailed to me so I don't always physically click on every one of them. I have over 20 pages of posts listed there that show unread by me. I just don't know where you are getting the "48 hour" comment. If you are not logging out, they should be there. You should never log out. Just leave when you are done. The forum will mark you logged out after a certain amount of time but doesn't clear your cookies the way it would if you physically hit the log out buttn. The New Posts link seems to do exactly what you want. What am I missing? What's New, Activity Widget, etc....I almost consider those "eye candy". They get updated on a schedule and only pull so much info anyway. Not what you should be using if you are truly wanting to see every post.

Don,

I never Log out.

I've made some adjustment on my end.

It seems the delete history/temp files/cookies was checked and executed every time I left a site.(option under internet properties/browsing history)

As far as the eye candy is concerned, was just trying to make the point that the data was passing by very quickly...Not that there was anything wrong with them.

Will let you know in a couple days,

Thanks Joe
