baylensman Posted November 13, 2014 #1 Posted November 13, 2014 Long story, but I no longer have a regular guy to take the bike to. Going to try to change the front tire myself. What tools do I need? Any articles? videos, picture?
Condor Posted November 13, 2014 #2 Posted November 13, 2014 I wouldn't mess with the actual tire busting and mounting. You can remove the front tire and take it to just about any MC shop, along with a new tire, and they will mount it for you. Generally runs around $30 buck or so.....
Seaking Posted November 13, 2014 #3 Posted November 13, 2014 Same.. I did a few of my own tires these past couple of years and nah, I'd sooner let someone else do it for me for $30. BUT if you do have to do it yourself, all you really need is at least three tire spoons, large clamp or something to break the bead and then something to balance the tire after installing the new rubber. If you're using dyna beads or balancing gel, you won't need to static balance the wheel.. Make sure to scrub clean the inside of the bead rim to avoid slow leaks etc
djh3 Posted November 14, 2014 #4 Posted November 14, 2014 I use a couple of 2x4 pieces to keep the disc from contacting the ground. So you lay those down and place the rim on it, then a longer 2x4 with a piece of a 2x2 against the bead of tire. I put one end under the hitch on the truck and make a fulcrum. The short piece of wood contacts the bead and you push down on the 2x4 with your weight. it should pop the bead. Then you need a couple of long tire spoons about $9 @ harbor freight I think and a couple rim savers. Plastic pieces that slip on rim so you dont gouge them with the spoons. Or you can split some gas line and use it. Then once its mounted up I put dyna beads in and away you go. The rear takes more time because you have to take the exhaust and bags etc off.
