Droneh8tr Posted November 10, 2014 #1 Posted November 10, 2014 83 VR I noticed that I only have a fuel shut off valve on my gas tank. I looked inside the tank and their is only a screened pipe coming from the fuel shut off valve. Am I suppose to have a fuel petcock arrangement which includes a fuel reserve position. Once I run out of fuel, I'm out, no switching to reserve. If I am suppose to have a reserve, whats the part number? Thanks
MiCarl Posted November 10, 2014 #2 Posted November 10, 2014 I believe your '83 only has On/Off. The newer models have On/Off/Res. Part number is 3JJ-24500-00-00. I'm guessing it'll fit........ Those of us with On/Off/Res typically leave them on "Res" and just use the fuel gauge - like in the car.
Flyinfool Posted November 10, 2014 #3 Posted November 10, 2014 I am not sure on the 83, but on the newer ones there is a reserve position on the valve at the bottom of the tank. Almost everyone just leaves it on reserve all of the time since it is not something that you can reach while riding. The gas gauge shows empty when you have about 1 gallon of fuel left in the tank. You can use this as your reserve. When the last bar on the fuel gage goes out I stop at the next station I come across. You can easily test this by stapping a fuel jug onto the bike and go for a ride until the gage reads empty, and then see how much farther you can go till it is out. You then have some gas with you to get to a station to fill it.
bongobobny Posted November 10, 2014 #4 Posted November 10, 2014 Correct, the '83 only had on/off! I have a brand new one of those should you ever need one...
Droneh8tr Posted November 13, 2014 Author #5 Posted November 13, 2014 Thanks everyone.. I'll need to tweak the fuel level sensor to reflect more accurately.. I had a bar on the indicator and ran out on the highway.. My wife had to come save me.. She even took a pic..
jdross440 Posted November 13, 2014 #8 Posted November 13, 2014 My standpipe is laying in the bottom of the tank so it doens't matter where I put the selector, except when I turn if to OFF and forget and take off. Get about 3 blocks in traffic and it quits. Therefore I rely on the guage like the others.

Droneh8tr Posted November 14, 2014 Author #10 Posted November 14, 2014 And??? All right all right.... You two jumped on wanting proof of my pain quick.. The wife didn't even get out of the car..
Venturous Randy Posted November 14, 2014 #12 Posted November 14, 2014 Is your bike an 83 or an 85? You appear to have an 85 or MKII trunk on it. RandyA
