buddy Posted March 21, 2008 #1 Posted March 21, 2008 Most everybody Knows Peg & I just bought an 88 GL1500. Well the bike runs real good and the paint is very nice but the trunk sure was not to my liking. Has a name painted on it by the PO calling the bike "Blue on Black. I learned from the Gold Wing site that "Easy Off will remove this name paint so I tired it today and yes it remove the name and did not hurt the paint job neither. So I saved the paint job and saved me some money too. I will try to post some photos later on. my internet will not allow it right now.

Gary N. Posted March 21, 2008 #4 Posted March 21, 2008 I've used easy off oven cleaner to clean greasy car engines for years. It does a great job and is much cheaper to buy then other commercial degreasers used for that application. Be careful though, if you leave it on too long it will take the paint off too.
buddy Posted March 21, 2008 Author #5 Posted March 21, 2008 I can see why you tired the oven cleaner Lowell, last weekend your Venture Cooked my Wing a couple of times. Your bike may have some miles on her, she sure can cook a Wing thats for sure....

Gary your so very true at what you say about the easy off. I only left it on for about 2-3 min. then I remove the easy off and paint then used warm water & soap cleaned and dried then re waxed the trunk. Sure did turn out real nice
Gambler Posted March 21, 2008 #7 Posted March 21, 2008 Thanks for the info, learned something new today Gambler:banana:
dray Posted March 21, 2008 #8 Posted March 21, 2008 i have not tryed it but was told by a few folks around here that oven cleaner would work good for cleaning a motor to they said it gets all the nooks and cranny's spotless and wont hurt the chrome
Kregerdoodle Posted March 21, 2008 #9 Posted March 21, 2008 My son used it on a `54 chev truck, removed the paint to the metal..... now just needs to sand her down and primer it... used the cheap dollar store brand...
Gary N. Posted March 21, 2008 #10 Posted March 21, 2008 WARNING....WARNING.....WARNING DON'T SPRAY EASY OFF ON ALUMINIUM PARTS It will cause then to discolor or oxidize. Found that out the hard way on our oven.

FROG MAN Posted March 21, 2008 #12 Posted March 21, 2008 I would like to see something cut that oxidation on my 84 motor.
Gary N. Posted March 21, 2008 #13 Posted March 21, 2008 What about our Venture Engines??? There's a product made by Loctite called "Natural Blue" that is bio-degradable and safe to use on aircraft (aluminium etc). I like that for cleaning the engine on the bike. You have to dilute it depending on what you are using it to clean but I find a 50/50 mix in a hand sprayer does a fantastic job on the bike. It even works good on the white wall tires. I buy it at a local industrial supply place.
WIKD Posted March 21, 2008 #14 Posted March 21, 2008 Easy off oven cleaner does not really turn aluminum yellow. What it does do is eat away at the clear coating that covers the aluminum. The metal itself is fine but the clearcoat gets eaten away. For a side job a few years ago I did aluminum polishing, mostly on sportbikes. Frames, swingarms you name it. Spray on easy off, let stand for about 10 minutes or so and spray off with a garden hose. Takes the clear coat almost 100% off and gets to the metal for polishing. Saved uncountless time over every other product we ever used including aircraft stripper. The oxidation comes from the bare aluminum not having the clearcoat on it anymore. Hit it with some polish and it will look like a mirror but it is a pain to keep up compared to chrome.

I was just wondering about the driver a passenger floorboards on my 06, do they have a clearcoat on them? and could they be polished up to shine like chrome? Craig
WIKD Posted March 21, 2008 #16 Posted March 21, 2008 In my experience, if aluminum is not oxidized then it's coated. just about any aluminum can be polished to look like chrome but it takes some work. You have to sand it using 4 to 5 grades of paper, then coarse polish it and lastly fine polish it. Floorboards wouldn't be to bad. You just have to decide whether you want to put in the time to do it.
