KIC Posted November 6, 2014 #1 Posted November 6, 2014 So, after giving away a good exhaust collector, my 89 decided to develop the "rattle". It is very noticeable when first started and cold. Does this have any actual performance or type of impact on the bike other than the annoyance level ? I have another one on my other parts bike, but that one was a *&^%& to try to get out and I gave up one time. I can work on getting that one out and cut open/fixed and welded before I take my 89 apart and then just swap. I am just wondering if the piece that is rattling can cause an issue. I thought I read one time that it can block the exhaust flow.. Also, an 84 should be the same as the one on the 89, correct ?
Yammer Dan Posted November 6, 2014 #2 Posted November 6, 2014 If you are real lucky you can pull the pipes and with a set of those Harbor Freight foot long needle nose reach in there and tear the rattling part out. Took me a couple hrs but it worked pulling, tugging wrapping it around pliers and about anything I could do. But I got a big piece of it out. Don't rattle now. I don't think it would hurt anything.
turtle Posted November 6, 2014 #3 Posted November 6, 2014 I put mine on the center stand located the spot welds on the bottom used self drilling screws to hold in place and then drilled 5/16 holes in the bottom and re welded the baffle in place inside. There was a thread some where that some one posted shown one cut open that is where I got location of the position of the baffle.
KIC Posted November 6, 2014 Author #4 Posted November 6, 2014 Thanks Dan. That might be worth a try. I have those pliers, bought a set a couple of years ago and actually used it twice yesterday on the bike while syncing the carbs and greasing the speedo. Those are a Venture owners best friend (besides you ). I will give it a try. Thanks.

There was a thread some where that some one posted shown one cut open that is where I got location of the position of the baffle. I wondered about doing something like that. Having already taken one off my parts bike, which I could lay over on it's side and not worry about any damage to the bike, it really is a PIA. I thought about cutting the bottom off while on the bike and re-welding it while it was still on the bike.
