cecdoo Posted March 20, 2008 #1 Posted March 20, 2008 I did the stebel horn upgrade, Thanks to all the help on this site it went great, also Thanks to Larry, his bracket is perfect for the job fits and looks great!! I removed the chrome cover from the rear as recommended and put a big dab of clear silicone on the top of the unit and stuck that cover rite on top, it looks great, also siliconed the side chrome cover on, my question, do you guys use some kind of covering over the wires, like a rub guard, to keep the insulation from wearing off? or is that overkill, also the connections seem dangerously close to the tail pipe, is that going to cause a problem? I have visions of those air-horns going off because of a short somewhere, and not being able to shut them off. Thanks Craig

AND CRIMPED THEM TO THE CONNECTORS TO KEEP THEM FROM COMMING LOOSE.
Pilot Posted March 20, 2008 #3 Posted March 20, 2008 I have mounted my horn two ways in the location that most people mount them. The first was with the output of the horn facing forwards. This mounting solution affords much more space between the exhaust and puts the connection in back away from the exhaust. It also provides much more room around the exhaust making cleaning the exhause easy. The second mounting solution was the way you now have yours, with the output of the horn facing to the right away from the bike, this makes it hard to clean the exhaust and puts the connections directly above and very close to the exhaust. I also made a bracket and mounted the horn behind and below the passengers right foot rest. I think Larry now makes a bracket to mount the horn in this location. I didn't like the looks of the horn in this location so I moved mine back between the Y of the exhaust where yours is now. I used 90 degree connectors because bending straight ones may weaken the connector and I didn't want them to break loose later. I just used wire ties to pull the wires away from any thing that they might rub on and attached them to the existing wire bundle that has the ground wire in it. I'm still looking at other locations because I'm not happy with the current mounting location.
Guest Saddletramp Posted March 20, 2008 #4 Posted March 20, 2008 I was given a plain Stebel horn by another member who had bought a chrome horn. For purely aesthetic reasons I didn't want to put it in plain site. Check out "dharnie's" mounting of a stebel. That is how I mounted mine. Even with it in the fairing it will make your ears ring!
Iowa Guy Posted March 20, 2008 #5 Posted March 20, 2008 Love those Stebels I rode out to see my 80 year old dad last week. He was out in his orchard on a ladder trimming limbs and not wearing his hearing aids. Horn was pointed away from him so I figured it was safe to touch the horn button. I won't do that again. He startled and I thought he was going to jump off the ladder. Iowa Guy
Vance Posted March 20, 2008 #6 Posted March 20, 2008 ... do you guys use some kind of covering over the wires, like a rub guard, to keep the insulation from wearing off? or is that overkill, also the connections seem dangerously close to the tail pipe, is that going to cause a problem? Thanks Craig I drilled two holes in the plastic part of the bottom of mine, and ran the wires through the holes. Then, I soldered the wires on to the tabs, and filled the areas with silicone RTV. As a result, nothing is sticking out the bottom, and the connections are water tight.
cecdoo Posted March 20, 2008 Author #7 Posted March 20, 2008 Thanks, I tried bending the connectors but couldnt quite get 90deg. I think I will look into some preformed 90s. Sorta like where the horn fits, so I think I am going to leave there, it is going to be a pain cleaning the pipes though. maybeI will carry a small pair of wire nippers, just in case I need to nip a wire quick if it shorts:rotf:Craig

Hey I like this idea best, Thanks
BigShell Posted March 21, 2008 #10 Posted March 21, 2008 I left my stock horns in place and mounted the Stebel under the trunk and inside of the HD taillights. I also mounted two fiamms up front under the airboxes and on top of the crash bars. Here is a thread with a few pics and a sound bite. Once in a while, when a bunch of bikes get together, someone will want to show how loud theirs are. They have a big smile until I press my horn button and grab everyones attention. I'm sure there are louder setups out there but not many can compete with 3 horns in the 120 to 130 db range plus the little bit the stock horns add... 5 horns in all.
