dna9656 Posted October 30, 2014 #1 Posted October 30, 2014 I'd like to convert my 84 (83.5) Royale to LEDs. I have already put 1157 bases in the rear amber blinker housings and have been running 1157s in there, this way I have amber running lights and blinkers in those housings. I'd like to install LEDs in the center RED brake light too. I know I will have to gin up a way to light the license plate, maybe a couple of 194 LEDs housed inside a small box and mounted on the clear panel on the red lens... I want LEDs in the front amber housings for running and blinkers too. I have found a LED compatible flashers on the web, some on amazon and some at superbrightlights.com. I'm thinking that even though I will be using an LED friendly flasher the hazard lights will still work as before correct? Could one of you tech people help me come up with a parts list? Any cautions and advice would be appreciated very much!
syscrusher Posted October 31, 2014 #2 Posted October 31, 2014 I bought these but I currently use one of them and one normal 1157. The problem is that they just don't get much brighter when the brake circuit is engaged. I don't want someone rear ending me because they didn't realize I had hit the brakes. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJEGQQ2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any cautions and advice would be appreciated very much! A couple of things. 1. In most areas it is illegal to have amber running lights to the rear. Amber is for front only. I have read about some people dying the amber turn signal lenses to red to make it legal. I never tried it so I do not know if or how well it would work. 2. Always match the color of the LED to the color of the lens. NEVER use a white LED behind a colored lens. 3. I replaced all of my brake running and turn bulbs with the 45 LED towers from SuperBrightLEDs. They are all much brighter than the incandescent and there is excellent contrast between brake and running. They are not cheap, but are worth every penny. 4. I am not sure on the electrical differences in the flasher circuit between your 84 and my 88. on mine if I went with a LED friendly flasher I would also give up the self canceling. I went wit just 2 load resistors, one for left and one for right. everything on the bike works as it should. 5. If You do LED brake/tail light, you will have to jumper the CMU to stop it from always indicating a bulb out. 6. I have my license plate lit with the red light from the LEDs. it is suposed to be white light, but so far after one year I have not been stopped.
dna9656 Posted October 31, 2014 Author #4 Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks Jeff for the legal info; so far I haven't been stopped for amber running lights but I will change it back...Why do you have to give up the self cancelling? Is it incorporated in the stock flasher? I wonder if a LED flasher w/self canx is available from Mother Yamaha or the other BIG bike makers.... Would you have the low down on what load resistors (size/value) you used and where you installed them?
Flyinfool Posted October 31, 2014 #5 Posted October 31, 2014 I did a thread somewher on my comversion. with values and P/Ns I just got home from hospitl and do not trust memory yet to give specifics000. Self cancle is in the stock flasher and uses both time and distance. distance is read from the speedo. any afermarket will not read the speedo for distance.

Yeah I just spent some time in hospital too; glad to be out; glad you got out too! Thanks! I'll do a search using your handle....

Just so y'all will sleep good tonight I wanted to let y'all know I got the amber running lights changed back to just blinkers, I have a drag specialties hitch on the bike, it has 2 lights on both side of the rear fender facing aft and 2 more on each side facing port and starboard so there are platy of running lights of the proper color back there, but now the BRAKE light is not working!

Got the brake/running lights working; I have 1157 LEDs there, The tail light warning on the dash is now ON; I'm guessing that's because of the low volts/amps the LEDs draw yes??? The lights ARE working properly....
pofarm Posted November 6, 2014 #11 Posted November 6, 2014 I put amber led dual intensity boards in my front flashers and red dual intensity led boards in my rear flashers and used clear lenses front and rear. Now I have red running lights in the rear. I used an led flasher since the self canceling didn't work, anyway. Amber running lights to the rear is illegal in Missouri. I don't know about other states. Way back when I had a pickup with red, amber and blue lights on it. The red and blue to the front were illegal and I knew it. I had them for a couple of years before getting stopped for it. "Luckily" I had amber lenses to swap them out and didn't get a ticket because I changed them on the spot. *grin* It all depends on the cops and whether they want to push the issue. It was a city cop that stopped me, not a state cop.
