bikercouple Posted October 30, 2014 #1 Posted October 30, 2014 I have a 1983 venture. I'm having cooling issues. After about 5 mins of the bike idling in driveway. Temp gauge raises and water pump cover started leaking anti freeze from hole. I took cover off and plastic impeller looks goood. I started the engine and rubbed something against the impeller to see if it was slipping. No slippage that I seen. Radiator was full and the reservoir bottle was to. Any ideas of the issue. Could the thermostat be stuck closed ? I haven't checked that yet. Thank you, Bikercouple
Venturous Randy Posted October 31, 2014 #2 Posted October 31, 2014 It sounds like you do have a leak in the water pump. At the front of the engine under the radiator, you will see some plumbing and a plastic black hex with lettering on it. That is the bypass valve and the tops of the letters should be pointing toward the 5 clock position. If you twist it around, it will bypass the thermostat. You can try to see if that makes a difference, but you will still need to do something with the water pump. I would suggest picking up an MKII with the metal impeller. RandyA
bikercouple Posted October 31, 2014 Author #3 Posted October 31, 2014 Thank you. Where can I buy a metal water pump at ?

The 83 appears to be metal and if so, it has been upgraded. It also has the elbow attached and the elbow itself is going for about $50 at Yamaha. RandyA
bikercouple Posted November 2, 2014 Author #5 Posted November 2, 2014 Should I be worried about buying a used one and have the same issue I have now ?
Venturous Randy Posted November 2, 2014 #6 Posted November 2, 2014 Should I be worried about buying a used one and have the same issue I have now ? You could buy the 83 for $20 and get the seals to rebuild it and be good to go. The one on my bike came off an 86 engine I picked up many years ago and has never leaked and probably has 140,000 miles on it. You just never know, but if I was going to put seals in one, I would want one with the metal impeller. RandyA
bikercouple Posted November 3, 2014 Author #7 Posted November 3, 2014 I bought a metal impeller and all new seals, O rings, bearing and gasket. I will let you know when I get it back together and the problem is fixed. Thank you for the knowledge !!! Bikercouple
