YamaGeezer Posted October 30, 2014 #1 Posted October 30, 2014 Hi all. Just bought a 2006 RSTD with extremely low miles, but it's a screamer. Jetson-mobile in every gear, it seems. No warranty, of course. Dealership will sell me an I-basket for $450. Probably another $50 to $100 to install it. Should I spring for it? Again, it's a real screamer. Thanks!
ACE50 Posted October 30, 2014 #2 Posted October 30, 2014 That's a tough question. Some people never get rid of it. I'm lucky my 06 RSTD is a quiet as a mad mouse! (exhaust.........no whine)
MikeWa Posted October 30, 2014 #3 Posted October 30, 2014 I would try changing to a different kind of oil first. For example, if it has synthetic go to Yamalube. Then ride it for a couple of hundred miles and see what happens Mike
Mike G in SC Posted October 30, 2014 #4 Posted October 30, 2014 I bought my 2006 RSTD used, 1.5 years with 17K miles. The PO had made Yamaha change out the basket when he had it, and this bike never whines. My 2009 RSV does whine sometimes but not enough to get mad. Does it most running the mountains. Yeah, experiment on the oil first. I use Amsoil 10w40, no complaints and a lot of miles between changes. Only problem with swapping the basket is it might not resolve it. If you do, see if you can get an understanding with the shop this must resolve the problem.
eusa1 Posted October 30, 2014 #5 Posted October 30, 2014 there is a member or two on here that have an I basket to sell, post a title wanting it and they will speak up.
eusa1 Posted October 30, 2014 #6 Posted October 30, 2014 quit looking, I found it in a post the other day, here is a link to the post and he may sell it if you ask?? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=86410&highlight=basket&page=2
djh3 Posted October 30, 2014 #7 Posted October 30, 2014 Well I asked a couple of folks but no answer. any of you smart guys tried a basket out of a first gen? What about a V-max? Same motors right? And I have not read anything about one of those screaming.
SilvrT Posted October 30, 2014 #8 Posted October 30, 2014 And I have not read anything about one of those screaming. My '85 was a "whiner" between 2900 and 3100 rpms in all gears.
Venturous Randy Posted October 31, 2014 #9 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) I think my 83 was about typical on whine and not usually noticeable. When I changed to a low mileage 83 engine that I put an 04 RSV transmission in it, the whine was very noticeable from 2,500 to 3,200 RPM's. I later changed the clutch basket back to the one from my old engine and it helped considerably. It is now very close to what it was before. RandyA Edited October 31, 2014 by Venturous Randy
