How do you identify the model number on a bike?

Hello again all,

 

You probably already know that I'm less than a week old in the group. But, I'm also fairly new to forums, in general!

 

I've belonged to a number of groups that have forums. But, I've avoided using the group forums in the past because I've just not taken the time to really figure them out, and learn how to use them properly.

 

With that said, I hope that I am posting in the correct area. If not, I ask that members please be patient with me while I learn exactly how to use the forums! Now, to the question at hand.

 

I'm trying to figure out exactly which model of bike I have! I purchased my 1986 Yamaha Venture Royale in April of this year. It's a beautiful bike, and I've really enjoyed it the past several months. It actually had an original owner's manual with it when I bought it. However, one question still lingers in my mind.

 

The owner's manual shows two different model numbers on the front cover, and I'm not sure how to tell which of them my bike is. The numbers are "XVZ13DS" and "XVZ13DSC".

 

Where do I find the model number ON MY BIKE, to see which of the model numbers my bike is?

I don't believe there is anything on the bike that indicates the model, other than it is encoded in the VIN. The model breaks out like this:

 

XVZ13 - 1300cc Venture

D - Royale package

S - 1986 Model year

 

C - indicates California emissions

 

The only way I know to determine whether it is a California model is to look for the charcoal canister in the carburetor ventilation system. The non-California ones just vent to the atmosphere. I suppose Yamaha has some record by VIN that would indicate exactly.......

 

The good news is that all the parts and specs for the XVZ13DS and XVZ13DSC are the same except for the fuel system, and the C being a couple pounds heavier.

Right hand side on the frame member that runs under the drives foot peg. There is a white tag on it with serial # on it.

 

Also on registration & title in Ohio.

 

The last 'C' in model number indicates bikes sold new in California.

I've checked the VIN, and am waiting on a PM response to find out which one it is. But, knowing the encoding information provided is a great help.

The VIN will indicate the model and the intended market for importation.

For 1986:
