ediddy Posted October 27, 2014 #1 Posted October 27, 2014 Rode my bike to work this morning and was forty miles from work. After I passed all the gas stations my gas light came on and I still had 30 miles to go. After the light is on for a while my bike will sputter and I switch to reserve which is supposed to have .9 gal left. This morning the bike never sputtered, it just kept running. I was holding my breath when I pulled into a gas station. My bike held 5.377 gals. I don't think I have ever been that low.
awsmsrv Posted October 27, 2014 #2 Posted October 27, 2014 The most I ever put in was 5.976. I average 5.239. Gotta admit was a little worried when I pushed it to the limit. I rarely put in less than 5 gal. That said, I do carry 2 20oz fuel bottles, probably good for about 15 miles, just in case.
ACE50 Posted October 27, 2014 #3 Posted October 27, 2014 You were on fumes! Most I put in was 4.8 gal. Oh wait a minute. RSTD is 5.3, RSV is 6 right?
XV1100SE Posted October 27, 2014 #5 Posted October 27, 2014 Riding thru Montana last year I went 70km on reserve (pulling a trailer, 2-up) and when I finally came to a gas station I shook the bike...there was no splashing of fuel in the tank - I was on fumes. Put in 5.2US gallons.
Brake Pad Posted October 27, 2014 #6 Posted October 27, 2014 6.074 two up pulling trailer. I know carry a 2 gallon tank while traveling:thumbsup2:
RedRider Posted October 27, 2014 #7 Posted October 27, 2014 I put in 10.3 gallons and had just reached reserve. Mind you, I have a 5 gallon aux tank plumbed in. RR
djh3 Posted October 28, 2014 #8 Posted October 28, 2014 Just a couple weeks ago going thru Ga. I was between Blue Ridge Ga and 441 over by Dillard. I put 5.6 gal in I think it was. I Was afraid I was going to have to push this big ole thing.
MikeWa Posted October 28, 2014 #9 Posted October 28, 2014 When I ran out of gas it took 5.5 gallons to fill my RSV. So I punched the filler neck. It now takes 6.0 gallons to fill it. I like the extra half gallon when I am on the road. Mike
TheCoffsKid Posted October 28, 2014 #10 Posted October 28, 2014 Hi, I've just done a 3000km trip and averaged 5.3litres per 100kms. I don't use the fuel gauge; I just look at odo2w and when it hits 300kms I pull in at the next servo. cheers
Rick Haywood Posted October 28, 2014 #11 Posted October 28, 2014 Somewhere close to $12,000 worth.............. Of you meant at one time 5.1 gallons
Flyinfool Posted October 28, 2014 #12 Posted October 28, 2014 4.8 gallons. But then I have a 1st gen with a 5 gallon tank...... I was sweating that one. Was riding interstate at 80, pulling a loaded trailer, into a 40 MPH head wind. I got 18 MPG on that tank.

If you didn't have to switch to reserve you might find that the standpipe for the ON position of petcock has come off. This has happened to a few bikes....essentially like running on reserve position at all times, but not having a coarse filter.
Mike G in SC Posted October 28, 2014 #14 Posted October 28, 2014 Somewhere close to $12,000 worth.............. Of you meant at one time 5.1 gallons Yeah, I was thinking that way. At my,,,,, almost 100k miles on my RSTD, and guessing 40 mpg, 2500 gallons (or 45 fifty five gallon barrels). At $3.50 guestimate average cost since new, $8750.00. Then, there's my RSV, with 67k miles,,,,,,,, Sorry, stepped in the Minutia!

wrenchrob Posted October 29, 2014 #16 Posted October 29, 2014 Not nearly enough! I have been working WAY to much this season. I'm a Ford mechanic ( that has nothing to due with being to busy) We lost 2 mechanics so to pick up the slack it has meant allot of overtime.
