alwrmcusn Posted October 18, 2014 #1 Posted October 18, 2014 The fuel gauge display on my 2009 Venture has been very erratic for the past couple of weeks. If I fill the tank it (usually) registers full but then drops to empty. As I ride it moves up a bit, down a bit in a rather random fashion. These are not sudden drops/rises but rather it will go from Full to Empty in 2-5 seconds. I've been relying on the trip meters to keep track of my fuel needs. I am assuming that this is likely a sensor problem. Anyone know if it is a "user" repair/replacement and if so how much $$$ to purchase? Or better yet, how much a dealer might charge (I ain't mechanical!!)?
bongobobny Posted October 18, 2014 #2 Posted October 18, 2014 It may be something as simple as the connector for the sensor being corroded or loose. The connector is under the ignition switch cover on the gas tank. You remove it with the two allen head screws on the cover. Squeeze the connector interlock to disconnect and spray it with contact cleaner then connect and disconnect it several times to reseat it...
alwrmcusn Posted October 19, 2014 Author #3 Posted October 19, 2014 Thanks Bongobobny, I'll give that a check before I start mortgaging the house to have the dealer do a repair
alwrmcusn Posted October 29, 2014 Author #4 Posted October 29, 2014 OK, tried reseating with no luck. My dealer (Ed's Cycles in Cleveland, TN) ordered the part(s) and is going to replace it on Saturday. Greg says it's about a 20-30 minute job.
Tliljenquist Posted March 29, 2015 #5 Posted March 29, 2015 How much did they quote you for the parts and labor? Mine has been acting up as well, I end up having to use the reserve when the sensor still shows 1/4 tank left Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
rickardracing Posted March 29, 2015 #6 Posted March 29, 2015 Mine sticks at 1/4 tank.......then drops to zero on occasion. Not real crazy about the digital bar gas guage. Just one of the things I do not care for on the bike. I really think Yamaha missed the boat on the guage set up or lack there of on the Venture.
Sailor Posted March 29, 2015 #7 Posted March 29, 2015 I have to go to reserve when the tank is still reading 1/4 full. It is a nuisance.
