Sorry for the multiple posts, but since this is a completely different question, figured I'd start a new thread....New Guys!!!!?:headache:

So, when I go to turn my bike over (1984 XVZ12DL-R)...I turn ignition switch to ON (bike in neutral), I hear a mechanical clicking for about 20 seconds or so, and when I look under bike there is a new puddle of gasoline.

So, I'm figuring the "clicking" sound is the fuel pump and it's disconnected somewhere...question is, is this a common problem? And where should I begin looking? Or, is it just a matter of, "follow that leak"?

Thanks in advance

The clicking IS the fuel pump...and the puddle of gas IS a fuel leak.

Oh, you already knew that.. :sign just kidding: :stickpoke:

I would look at the "outlet" fuel line hose starting at the fuel pump and follow it.

Either a clamp is loose, or the hose is cracked

Yes the fuel pump makes a dull clicking noise for about five seconds when the ignition is switched on IF the float bowls are in need of fuel. Sometimes, if the float bowls are full, the fuel pump may not run. The fuel pump only pumps when the float valve is open.

Two things of note in your description of the problem: the fuel pump should not run for more than five seconds or so if the engine is not firing. That is a safety feature built into the fuel pump electrical system to prevent fuel spewing in the event of a mishap. Twenty seconds of pumping indicates an issue with that safety device. Secondly, if one or more of your float valves are stuck open, the fuel pump will fill the float bowls to the point of overflow. The overflow lines (one for each carb) terminate above the swingarm pivot point.

Prairiehammer beat me to it.. I just came back to edit my first post to tell you that your carbs may be stuck too....causing an overflow...(appearing as fuel leak)

If the gas is leaking out of a hose in front of your rear tire then I would expect one of the carb floats is stuck open

When you turn it on and hear the clicking see where the gas is leaking from.If the gas comes from the carburetor overflow tubes( bottom of bike) the problem could be in the carbs. Pull the left side plastic engine cover off and find the fuel pump.If you turn the bike on and see fuel dripping from this area, it is the pump or rubber tubes connected to it.I had to replace all my O.E.M. hose clips in the fuel pump area because they all started to leak. The pump is easy to come out and service too.
