mmaleney Posted October 9, 2014 #1 Posted October 9, 2014 Hi all. Anyone out there running a 83 with a set of carbs from a 87 on there bike ?. I picked up a 83 over the weekend but the carbs are in need of cleaning, I have a set from my 87 that is off the road needing some work, so I was wondering how the 87 carb's would run on the 83 I was hoping they would just bolt on and go with no need to rejet if I have to do that I may as well clean the 83 carbs . Thanks all.
dingy Posted October 9, 2014 #2 Posted October 9, 2014 Carbs will work fine. You will however have an issue with the vacuum line that is connected to left front carb. Only on the 83 model was this line hooked above the throttle plates, 84 & later, it was connected to one of the sync ports on the rubber intakes below the throttle plates. This change in vacuum source results in the 83 TCI's only usable with 83 carbs due to the vacuum port above the throttle plate is not on 84 & later carbs. The boss is still in the carb body casting, just not machined for brass nipple. Leaves you with 3 viable options with 87 carbs, Drill out carb body and install nipple. Switch to a stock 84-89 TCI. Lastly install an Ignitech TCI. Gary
