Was riding today with a Ducati and some other crazy sportbike. Obviously I don't expect the Venture to compete with those bikes for raw power and torque but was wondering where the bike comfort level was.

I was cruising for a couple hours at about 4500 RPM in 5th gear which was about 120-130 KM/h.

I've read that these engines wind out pretty nicely, but would you cruise much faster than that? I don't think I would need to go much faster but when I want to pass someone who is being unsafe or poses a risk to me I want to do it in a hurry. Can I drop down to 4th and wind the bike up to 7000 RPM?

Thanks in advance :)

I've ridden my First Gens on the Interstates for hours at 125kph (77mph). The engine is not going to mind. 4500 rpm is right in the 'sweet spot' for torque. I don't usually downshift to overtake, just give it more gas. If you feel the need to downshift to overtake, go ahead; redline is 7500 rpm and some have turned it faster, much faster.

BTW, there is no rev limiter on 1983-1989 Ventures.

Mark, first of all, welcome to our crazy bunch and we hope you join. It will be the best $12 you will ever spend on your bike. And, you might learn something. Also, given the significant difference between these bikes, it helps if you note the bike you are talking about, either in your comment or in your header at the top.

As far as your bike and RPM's, on the engine I just swapped out of my 83,that had 167,000 miles on it, it has seen 8,000 RPM's many, many times and it was running great. The engine I put in the bike, that I had put an 04 2nd gen transmission in it doesn't run as strong, but still working on that.

With the trans change and a V-Max final drive, I am running about 4,200 RPM's at 80 mph.

Well there kind of is a rev limiter, but it is more aptly called valve float.........:whistling:

I usually cruse at right around 4,000 rpm, even if it means running a lower gear.

At 75mph there is no problem with dropping to 3rd if you need or want to move out quickly.:big-grin-emoticon:

Nice folks thank you for the responses. I missed shift yesterday from second to third instead dropped it to first and the bike got all excited :) Didn't seem to hurt it though. heh. Next outting I'll try some kickdown passes. Next summer I'll be doing some 600km long haul rides in bad traffic so I Want to be able to get around yahoos I don't feel comfortable behind.

As for joining I have intended to. No excuse except sheer procrastination :)

I have both, an 83 first gen, and a 08 2nd gen, love just taking the 83 and messing with the crotch rockets around here, have run 90 mph for a tank full, the 2nd gen is a dream for all day riding with the wife on back, many days of 700+ miles. Still love the 83 for the twisties!:bluesbrother:

Like I said... "If everything seems to be under control, you ain't goin' fast enough!

Big Red pretty much sings in all RPM ranges. but I find myself in the 4k-4.5k range most of the time on the highway.

4000 rpm? 4500 rpm? 7000 rpm?

Wow ... at 120 km/h I'm sitting around 2800 rpm ...

ooops ... sorry, I guess V-twins don't need those higher rpm's :stickpoke: :whistling:

Hah! My VStar 950 redlines at 7500rpm....VTwin!

And my VR loves 4,000 all day long!

I'm an RPM guy!

Where will the rev limiter kick in on my '92 ? :confused24:

That is a good question, to which I have no answer. All I know is in the XVZ13DA Supplementary Service Manual, it notes that the Digital Ignitor prevents engine over revving.

Kevin you have a 90-93...:whistling:.

Yes, yes I do. So what are you inferring, Neil?

I've never experienced any 'rev limiting' even when I turned the 1990 to nearly 9000 rpm. Haven't turned the '91 beyond redline...yet.

Kev, Are you serious? 9,000rpm?

I know everyone here talks about how good these engines are...but that is way over red line. I'm impressed!!

Guess the secret is keep the valves in spec and good oil...and enjoy the ride!

Thanks, I'm not going to worry about the engine at all...!
