BigLenny Posted September 20, 2014 #1 Posted September 20, 2014 Hey Folks, I stopped by the Apple store yesterday to take a gander at the much anticipated Apple iPhone 6 and 6+. The place was packed and they told me earlier in the morning there were a bunch of folks camped out in tents to be in the first group to get their hands on them. I don't mean to be a killjoy, but, once I was able to get it in my hands and look at it, I became bored very quick. It is basically the same thing as my iPhone 5S with a bigger screen. I know, I know, it has a little do dad here and there inside the operating system that is different, but the basic way of operating and the way the screen looks is no different than what we iPhone users already have. I got the immediate feeling that all Apple did was bring their phone up to the level of the Samsung's that have been larger and have had some of the new Apple features for quite some time now. I am an Apple user. Myself and my wife have iPhones. I am typing you this message on my Apple iMac in my home office. We have 2 iPads. So, I believe in Apple products. But I find it hilarious how every year they are able to get the general public all riled up in a tizzy about their new products that really aren't anything earth shattering when they come out. Crazy good marketing Apple does. I am fully aware that a boat load of you are technology resistors and you're doing just fine with your basic flip phones that do what a phone should do; call people. But, for us minions who get sucked up into the techno gadgets that the world has to offer, I want to report, I am officially not greatly impressed with the new iPhones. My 2 cents.
lsutley Posted September 20, 2014 #2 Posted September 20, 2014 I have been tempted by the various iPhone upgrades with the results being that the incredible price tag for "improved technology" is not justified. My wife and I have iPhone CDMA 4's services through TracFone at $120.00 per year. I bought both phones used with a total investment of under $500.00 (would be a lot less now). They can be configured to accomplish more tasks than I'll ever need or want. The software can be upgraded to the OS 7.1 level which, I believe, offers everything that the 4S, 5, and 5S would except conversation with Siri. IMHO the iPhone 4 with a TracFone carrier is one of the best values in the cellphone marketplace.
rbig1 Posted September 20, 2014 #3 Posted September 20, 2014 im on my 3rd Samsung phone. s5 at this time all of them haven't made it through the contract with out dyeing out. I think the company has them rigged to fail before 2 years are up. they don't offer flip phones any more at uscell. most of the ones camping out for a phone are younger generation probably. as far as laptops go asus are slow processing between screens that's what I have now.
Freebird Posted September 20, 2014 #4 Posted September 20, 2014 Well here's my story and I'm sticking to it. I carry two phones. One for personal and one for business. I had two iPhones until about a year ago when I upgraded my personal phone. I decided to give the Android a try and bought a HTC1. It is a nice enough phone but to be honest, I can't stand it. Little thing that Google integrates into it that I can't get rid of just drive me nuts. Like the blink feed on the opening screen. I have it turned off so that it doesn't update but I don't want it there at all. There are many other little things too but the bottom line is, I just don't like it. I went with it primarily because I did indeed want a phone with a bigger screen. Now Apple has finally introduced the 6 plus and to be honest, I would be all over it but I'm locked into this HTC1 for another year. Make no mistake about it though, as soon as I am able, I will be replacing it with the iPhone 6 Plus. My company phone is a 5s. I just like the operating system on the IPhone much better than the Android. Pretty much my only complaint with the iPhone is that they won't let you customize the icons and a few other things. I just don't get that. I have jailbroken most of my iPhones so that I can customize it the way I want but the updates have come out so often lately that I finally just quit messing with the jailbreaks.
Bubber Posted September 20, 2014 #5 Posted September 20, 2014 I pay by the minute and I use it to make calls. What else do you need? Minions.... I like that! I find it funny that the people would camp out weeks to buy a product. Don't they have jobs? If not where do they get the money to buy one? I just think it is funny then it pisses me off that people are constantly on their phones diving down the road taking my life into their hands. I would just like to shoot their tire out ,but I don't want to suffer the consequences of doing that and getting caught, so I give them lots of room. I can only hope they reck their car and don't hurt anyone else. Yes I know I am not a teckie, just old school and that's the way I like it. Going back to my corner boss and waiting for the smoke to clear.
XV1100SE Posted September 20, 2014 #6 Posted September 20, 2014 I saw a write up comparing an iPhone 6+ to a 2012 Android phone. Apple is 2yrs behind the competition. Even Blackberry with their BB10 OS is further advanced (and a better phone). I received a brand new iPad Aire and the functionality was similar to a 10yr old iPod that I have. I don't see any improvement in functionality or user friendliness.
Angelo Posted September 20, 2014 #7 Posted September 20, 2014 I saw a write up comparing an iPhone 6+ to a 2012 Android phone. Apple is 2yrs behind the competition. Even Blackberry with their BB10 OS is further advanced (and a better phone). I received a brand new iPad Aire and the functionality was similar to a 10yr old iPod that I have. I don't see any improvement in functionality or user friendliness. As much as Apple users tried to down play the size of the screens, it is something that most everyone actually wanted. While the OS is slightly different, Apple has finally made a change that to me would make it worth an upgrade assuming you didn't run right out and buy a 5 that is. What I want to know is if they truly have a battery that will last. My Galaxy Note 3, I can watch 3 full length movies and still have battery power to call my ride when I get to the airport. Big screens eat up a lot of power, hope for you Apple guys they took that into account.
Kirby Posted September 20, 2014 #8 Posted September 20, 2014 I have an "old" Lg. Showtime that I bought a year ago. It had served me very well. I take pics, do documents, email, watch videos, store stuff from work on, surf the web, visit Venturerider.org, text others, stay in touch with service reps for the company I work for, pay my bills, use its gps when on the road, and also use it as a TELEPHONE! All this for $45 dollars a month and the phone only cost me $248 new. I don't need a status symbol!
Kirby Posted September 20, 2014 #9 Posted September 20, 2014 Also forgot to mention I use it to play games occasionly and listen to music. When the battery gets low( usually once a day) I just pop out the battety and put another in. It stays on 24/7 other than that!
MidlifeVenture Posted September 20, 2014 #10 Posted September 20, 2014 Wife and I went to Ireland for our 25th wedding anniversary this year and upgraded from a flip phone to the iPhone 4C it was free other than being forced into a data plan but had international capabilities. I only have like 1Gig per phone and stay away from constantly playing with it. With all the upgrades lately it is hard to even text without using data they are purposefully making changes to eat up data and cost you more. So to me I see the more advanced the phone the more likely you will play with it and make the cellular companies richer.
syscrusher Posted September 20, 2014 #11 Posted September 20, 2014 I copied and pasted this from an email I sent out on the day this crap was introduced. If the links didn't translate, too bad you can Google them yourself. I despise Apple, being fairly tech savvy I am aware that they don't produce hardware that has the best specs and I hate the restricted proprietary nature of the Apple ecosystem. I also dislike the stratospheric hype that surrounds the release of their products. They couldn't buy the kind of publicity that they are given free of charge by the media sheep. No other manufacturer that I am aware of is afforded this advantage. I am so very happy that Google stepped up to offer credible competition to expand the feature set of these types of devices. Steve Jobs had always stolen other people's ideas and re-packaged them as his own. The McIntosh was an idea that Xerox PARC demoed to Jobs back in the day. When the iPod came out in 2001, digital audio players had already been a reality for 22 years, beginning with the IXI produced in 1979 and patented in 1981. Other such devices had also been released by Cowan, Archos, Audible, Diamond Rio, etc. The iPhone was based on prior work from Palm, Blackberry, Nokia, Erickson, Motorola and Sony, etc. There were even some very early devices like the Simon Personal Communicator, released in 1994; and this forward looking Western Electric integration. The iPad of course was based on designs as early as the 1994 Fidler tablet concept. Samsung already has watches on the market, one of which has a camera built in and will perform some useful functions without a companion phone, another has a heart rate monitor and pedometer. Watches with heart rate monitors have been available for 25 years. Many of the capabilities of the newly released Apple Watch are useless gimmicks. Steve Jobs was only a genius in his ability to dupe millions of people into thinking that he was a genius and to steal the brilliant ideas of others. He had access to a very talented design team that created very pretty devices that people bought initially as status symbols and badges of community membership. Sadly the devices created by Apple's design team lacked features, adaptability, and superior specs. And now the cute, funny, irritant. http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/7l4ykI8wsxGJeC6GFVhRIA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYwMA--/http://globalfinance.zenfs.com/en_us/Finance/US_AFTP_SILICONALLEY_H_LIVE/Android_Fans_Are_Laughing_Over-da9a1ffe64ab65e8fd3ab5bc0afdc95f.cf.png Android Fans Are Laughing Over This Graphic Showing...The new iPhone fails to beat 2012's Nexus 4 on several key specs. Also, I wasn't yet aware of this smartphone for the wrist from Samsung. So Apple's vaporware Watch also is already several years behind the curve. Samsung Gear S So, to sum up, Apple is the Harley Davidson of electronics.
XV1100SE Posted September 21, 2014 #12 Posted September 21, 2014 I get 48 hours on a charge on my Blackberry Z30 with fairly heavy use. The Z30 also has : - 5" Super AMOLED screen with 1280 x 720 resolution, at 295 ppi 24-bit color depth - Dual Core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm MSM8960T Pro - 8 megapixel auto-focus camera rear camera - 5-element F2.2 lens, Flash, continuous and touch to focus, image stabilisation, Proprietary Enhanced Super Resolution Digital Zoom (5x), 1080p HD video recording - 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera front camera - Image and video stabilisation, 3x digital zoom, 720p HD video recording - wifi 802.11 a/b/g/n, 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz, 4G Mobile Hotspot - NFC .... which Blackberry's have had for several years - Paratek antenna - it "learns" and provides enhanced/boosted carrier signal in low signal areas - micro SD card capability - unlike Apple, I'm not stuck with the capacity of the phone. I can interchange micro-SD cards up to 128GB - USB OTG - using an inexpensive cord, I can connect a usb memory stick, powered usb hub, keyboards, mice..... - micro HDMI - inexpensive cable and connect to my tv. I don't have to buy a proprietary cable - micro USB charging - again, no proprietary cable BB 10 OS has : - Priority Hub to organize messages and social media - learns your individual writing style and adapts to it, making personalized next-word suggestions - ability to run native BB 10 and Android apps directly Anyone comparing Apple 6/6+ to Blackberry, Android, and even Windows smartphones on specs and abilities, wouldn't be going to Apple.
