Guest rooster522 Posted March 18, 2008 #1 Posted March 18, 2008 i changed my oil today. weird thing it toook a long time for the oil to show in the window. i put 4 quarts plus a filter. finally after a long tiome it showed. about halfway in the window is this the correct place?
Jerry W Posted March 18, 2008 #2 Posted March 18, 2008 Yep, half way up the window is correct. That is with the bike standing straight up, not on the stand. I am thinking the manual actually calls for 3.9 US quarts with filter change. There has been a lot of discussion on the amount to put in. It does take a little bit for the oil to run down and show in the window.
Tom Posted March 18, 2008 #3 Posted March 18, 2008 If you develop an il leak it probably is overfiled a little..trust me I did it the first time I changed the oil.
piper Posted April 15, 2009 #4 Posted April 15, 2009 I have changed my oil 3 times till is full (as the top mark)not a leak

Thanks Gino:thumbsup:
pegscraper Posted May 15, 2009 #6 Posted May 15, 2009 I have changed my oil 3 times till is full (as the top mark)not a leak Have you taken a look at your air boxes? With the oil level that high, I'll bet it's a sloppy mess.

Thanks Gino:thumbsup: Man, that is a question that usually opens a real can of worms. There are a lot of good oils out there and a lot of people who are much better informed than I am. I presently run Amsoil, but I don't know if it is worth the cost. A lot of guys run Mobile1, Rotella, etc. Just make sure it is not "energy conserving" because that is not compatable with a wet clutch like ours has. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Thanks Gino:thumbsup: Go to "search" and start with Rotella, or Amsoil, or Mobile1 or ....... You'll be reading for A while :scorched:and you'll probably still be confused

My question is... Did you do this all with the bike on the side stand or straight up and down? I just changed my oil Saturday and put 3 quarts in and it was almost halfway up the sight glass with a new filter (The longer PureOne). Should only take about 3.25 quarts to get it half way up the sight glass.

Thanks Gino:thumbsup: I like the Rotella 15-40...I've read that the 10-40 is to thin and the 20-50 is to thick (hurts fuel mileage) the 15-40 is somewhere in between. Other than that with recommended oil changes must will say it doesn't matter what kind of oil you use. As posted before look at the circle on the back of the bottle for one that does not have "energy conserving" on it. Most of you synthetics will have it. Also, if your lookin for a backrest, try utopia back rests. I wish I'd known about them when I bought my RSTD.
