Phoneman1981 Posted September 8, 2014 #1 Posted September 8, 2014 Hello Everyone: Coming back from Estes Park CO over labor day, I pulled into a gas station for fuel. Noticed a later model Goldwing pulling a trailer parked near the building. When I went inside to purchase a cold drink, I spoke to the couple, they were from Central Kansas. Turned out they were broke down. Evidently the bikes rear brake locked up on them. The owner indicated the same thing happened a couple of years ago and was fixed under warranty. They were on day 2 of a 10 day trip. Any other GW riders experience anything like this??
Midrsv Posted September 8, 2014 #2 Posted September 8, 2014 I had the same thing happen. Fortunately I was local at the time. I stopped at a light and when I took off it felt like I was dragging a sled. I pulled over and I could smell hot brakes. It released on its own and travelled on. When it happened the second time I took it in for warranty work. The told me my caliper was rusted and it wasn't covered under warranty. They cleaned and rebuilt my caliper and charged me a couple of hundred bucks. The next day it started dragging again. I had to fight with Honda to get them to replace the caliper and master cylinder. They did. On a recent trip I thought I could smell hot brakes at a stop but didn't notice any dragging. Dennis
Phoneman1981 Posted September 8, 2014 Author #3 Posted September 8, 2014 Thanks. Just wondering if this issue is a common well known issue.
cowpuc Posted September 8, 2014 #4 Posted September 8, 2014 This may or may not help in their situation.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12536 Even though written from one of my experiences with a 1st Gen, most hydraulic systems (be it brake or clutch related) are subject to dirty hydraulic fluid (brake fluid) causing situations like you are describing Phoneman.. Given, a dirty piston or two or four can/will cause the problem too BUT this article describes a scenario where a stuck brake is not dirty piston related.. An easy way to find out whether its piston or blockage in the purge hole is to loosen the bleeder valve on which ever caliper is sticking with the brakes being stuck.. If loosening the bleeder valve relieves pressure and releases the calipers hold on the brake pad it is probably not a stuck piston and more than likely a blocked purge hole..

M61A1MECH Posted September 8, 2014 #7 Posted September 8, 2014 Honda has issued their second recall notice concerning rear brakes on certian year models of Goldwings, up to 2012. here is a link to a post started by Eck a few days ago. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=88588
Eck Posted September 8, 2014 #8 Posted September 8, 2014 Thanks. Just wondering if this issue is a common well known issue. You stated they had an earlier model Goldwing. Not sure if you meant like a 1200 or 1500 GW., or if you meant a 2001/2002 1800 model. It is a known problem on the 1800's. I just put a 2013 rear caliper on my 1800 about a month ago because my original old caliper I installed speed bleeders and I could not get them to seal. They would suck air and I would have to continually bleed the rear caliper. Anyway. that problem is now fixed, but the old caliper is still good and I plan on keeping it as a spare. Honda is recalling certain model year 2001-2010 and 2012 GL1800 and 2001-2005 GL1800A motorcycles for brake problems. Owners should be receiving notices in the mail shortly in the near future. I do not know if this was a common problem on the 1200's or 1500's http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=88588
