Just saw this news. Two Canadians riding in Florida with a group of other riders were killed when a wire spool fell off a truck. The driver of the truck could get "up to 60 days" for unsecured load that resulted in death.

That's terrible.

Memo to self, stay back far enough to have time to react to anything falling out of the vehicle in front of me. It normally happens so fast, you have no time to react or dodge.

Can't say I do this all the time but I try too.

What I just read this was way back in Feb. Says they are looking for the guy but he has moved from the area. oot, he probably just moved a couple counties over and the police wont spend the money to look for criminals unless its capitol offence. Was a news story on this a month or so, convicts out awaiting sentence and skip to another state.

Its bad on some of these trucks. Loads unsecured, mud flaps about to become projectiles.

Yup, and do a visual assessment of that risk, so you know when to take even greater defensive precaution.

Was the truck going the same direction the bikers were, or was it going the other way. If it was going the same way I think you'd have a chance of protecting yourself. But what could you do if the truck was traveling the opposite direction and the spool fell of and turned so it was right in front of you? Only 60 days in jail and he disappeared........it ain't right.

trucking regulations are strict, enforcement is lax. I used to own a moving company. I was glad to get rid of the headaches.

The guy probably has other more serious reasons for not showing. A fine and/or 60 days is nothing to really speak of as far as punishment goes.

All we can do is try to be a vigilant as possible and sometimes that isn't even enough.

Sorry....you are right, the accident happened Feb 18, 2014. I saw the article that showed Sept 3.... but as an "update".

Still.... he kills 2 people and disappears.

I never trust trucks and stay well away from them. It is not just the load. Often brakes or tires are marginal. I was passing a large truck when a tire blew out right beside me. Very scary. I try to keep aware of what is happening with oncoming traffic as well, even on divided highways.

I think what spiked it and made it noticeable was the fact it is now going to trial or something. anyways they are looking for the guy and cant seem to find him.
