I've seen this issue come up now and then, thought I'd post a link to see if it might help some folks.

This is a link to a simple photoeditor I used when I was on a pc. It will do batch (multiple) resizing of photos, and even add watermarks if you want.

It will also batch upload to the PictureTrail site, but you dont have to use that function, you can just save pictures to a new folder, or resize the ones you have. Then you can upload pictures to this site, or others, that have a size limitation.

I'm using a mac now, and batch resizing is included in iPhoto, so I dont use PictureTrail now, but I did in the past and it worked well.

I use Linux on all my own hardware. I recommended Apple to a buddy who was buying his first computer at 47. He got an iMac and is tickled pink.

On pictures I'm going to post online I like to not just reduce the size, but the quality as well. Reducing the output quality of jpegs to around 50% reduces their byte count while still leaving them with high enough resolution for a web slide show.

I have a Mac with iPhoto. Maybe you can explain a couple things to me. Is there a way to tell what MB size the thing will come out while you're in process choosing the height and width? Is there a way to reduce the quality level (reducing the file size) independently of changing the height and width?

Any PC running Windows XP has the resize feature. Right click on any pic file and the resize option is in the drop down menu.

Actually I believe that feature is a free addon called image resizer powertoy

It's a great tool and I use it all the time. You can choose a size or custom make a size. You can create a new file or change the size of the original. All from within windows. It will do 1 at a time or as many as you want to highlight at a time.

As far as I know, your stuck with what iPhoto defaults to. I know that in Windows you can change resolution and dimensions, and get an idea of the size of the output. In iPhoto, I'm assuming you are in 'edit' mode (or multiple select) and you click 'file' then click 'export'...you do get to select output as original, or reduce the output to your chosen size, and I find that 400 to 600 pixels wide is about right for decent jpgs here on the net.

iPhoto keeps asking me if I want to upgrade, and I'm always telling it 'later'...maybe the new version has this ability....

There are a bunch of third party image editing software packages for macs, but I'm finding out thru software demos, that most of these are hugely powerful, and very complex and difficult to learn..they are obviously for pros, and take some training or lots of hours to be able to use well.

If you find something that is similar to (but simpler than) Adobe, that is both cheap and easy to learn, let me know!

The nuisance of it is that I have to export the thing, then get info to see what MB size the thing came out to be. If it's still too big for a certain place I want to put a pic, then I have to guess at it all over again. Plus I lose the custom icon too. I know there are entire books just on using iPhoto, so maybe the features are in there someplace yet. But rather than spend a bunch of time figuring something else out, I keep doing it the way I know how to do it, the lesser nuisance.

Mail now has a picture resizing feature right in it, which shows the MB size as you're choosing it. Drag a pic into an email note, reduce it, and drag it back out. Really fast and quite a bit more convenient. But it reduces the dimensions of the pic more than I think is necessary for the file size. I wish there were a way to change the parameters of that.

I use GIMP on Linux. There is a free Mac OS X version too. GIMP has quality adjustment as part of its jpg save function. If you select 'Show preview in image window' it'll calculate the size and show you the changed image.

I just took a 2.5mb image that was 1988x1488 and converted it to 800x600 yielding 171k. I reduced it to 50% with a final size of 29.5k. The image is a little granier, but quite adequate for most internet applications.

All of the pictures on my web site have been manipulated in this manner using GIMP.

Man, I can't believe all the gyrations everybody is going thru to resize a pic. Windows XP, right click on the file, pick resize, the size, hit OK. It keeps the original intact and gives another file labled smaller. Takes about a nano-second, and it's ready to upload. I don't see why everyone gets involved with full blown image editors, when all you need to do is resize. You can also highlight a whole folder of images, do the same thing, and they'll all resize......

Well I down loaded it at Freebirds suggestion a while back when I had Windows 98 installed on another machine, and liked it. Then the old computor sorta crashed and I ordered a new one from Dell with XP already installed on it, and low and behold the resize was already there??? Beats me how it got there?? Maybe when I transfered work files and such it came along for the ride??? I always thought it was a standard feature of XP because I didn't do a dang thing.... Oh well. It musta been mirrors... :)

Yall missed the part about watermarking your photos, huh? I dont think Windows can do that!

Actually, I have the option in the software here to add watermarks automatically to any photo uploaded here or in the PicGallery. I just don't see a good reason to do it. :)
