painterman67 Posted August 26, 2014 #1 Posted August 26, 2014 well my 91 VR is sputtering bad...............it all started on a charity ride when it cut off at a light and took a while to recrank then didn't run well after that. Talked to muffinman and he said check for vacume leak around carbs with wd40. Did that and now it will idle after I found one leak. Put new fuel filter on also and it runs better but still not wright. When you go from idle to full throttle (either in gear under load or on sidestand in neutral) it will spit and sputter and eventually catch up. Less so under load in gear. help please as Im at so much of a loss I am debating just selling the old girl and save a year or 2 till I can fund something newer

Sometimes a weak spark will cause the sputtering....
painterman67 Posted August 26, 2014 Author #3 Posted August 26, 2014 I dont have a meter but the one on the bike shows better than 12 with the exception of when I hit the braks. Even then its only a touch below the 12 volt line. I know those can be off. Maybe I can get my hands on a meter tomorrow or sooner. Battery is an Agm installed 6 months ago new

When the last time you gave it a new batt?
painterman67 Posted August 26, 2014 Author #5 Posted August 26, 2014 Yeah, it sounds like your battery is really low. Why?? Not a clue. It could be the stator, rectifier, or the battery itself. When the last time you gave it a new batt? ok so took it to advanced auto battery check showed 12.66 not running and 592 cca running went from 12.88-14.6 depending on revs. oki so now for the weird......decided to check the air filter to see if its clean.........filthy and tried cranking it with airbox back together without filter and no more sputtering in the drive. I dont want to go down the road and get dirt in. Going to clean the filter tomorrow (K&N and I have plenty of filter oil and no cleaner). Then let dry and try it again..........thanks for all the help........Im not sure if this is the fix but it seems to help............any other ideas and I will check them. I do love my bike and dont want to sale her just not a mechanic and Im lost and spitballing any ideas. Muffinman also suggested checking the diaphrams but that scares me so Ill let my betters check those.... again many thanks and I will follow through as best as I can on my end
Black wing Posted August 28, 2014 #6 Posted August 28, 2014 air filter is probably a big part of the problem, i took the k&N out of my bike after the top collapsed. and i didn't find the flow was real amazing either.
Guest HdHtr Posted August 28, 2014 #7 Posted August 28, 2014 Going to clean the filter tomorrow (K&N and I have plenty of filter oil and no cleaner). Then let dry and try it again.......... Use plain old regular tide detergent. Cup in a bucket of water, do the wash. Rise when done.
Neil86 Posted August 28, 2014 #8 Posted August 28, 2014 (edited) Are you noticing any odd tachometer behavior....rpm bouncing or dropping to zero at a steady road speed? It just seems very odd that an air filter would bring on sudden problems with operation. If its still acting up after the air filter servicing....you might try checking voltage at the red/white wire on the ignition fuse with the bike running. Edited August 28, 2014 by Neil86
