I found some passenger armrests on eBay. The mounting bases cleaned up good but the uprights had too much rust to polish off. I had the uprights sandblasted and powder coated for $5 each (the chrome plater wanted $175 for the pair). My question: How tight should the bolt through the pivot be? Should the uprights be free to pivot or tight enough to stay upright and still able to push the outward in case an emergency exit has to be made? Or somewhere in between?

I have those exact style and I have them so that they won't push over too easily but still work when you want them to move . At times I have to do small adjustments to set the tension. You will like these and are well worth the money you put into them.

You will probably want enough tension to keep them from unintentionally flopping down, but loose enough to be able to rotate them down fairly easily; the armrests prevent the trunk from opening, unless they are rotated down some. The passenger will rotate the left one down all the way to mount and dismount. Be careful that the armrests don't mar the saddlebag lid when rotated down all the way. And discourage the passenger from pushing down on the lowered armrest while mounting and dismounting. 'NO STEP' sign?
