Brake Pad Posted August 22, 2014 #1 Posted August 22, 2014 This is brake pad I got a few questions I want to get a website started for my company and I have to buy a domain name. Does anybody know where the best location is to get a website preferably cheap to start out with and then eventually add in so I can get pictures and the feedback from homeowners. After 12 years of being in business in Broward County most of my work was word-of-mouth or yellow pages I'm finding here in Vero Beach area it's not the same way I'm going to have to start myself a website so if any help our anybody that can help me out and Point me in the right direction so I can gain access to more business in the area any help would be most grateful appreciated. Starting a website for me is like me looking at a chalkboard with physics questions on it I have no clue how to answer them
Money Venture Posted August 22, 2014 #2 Posted August 22, 2014 I run several websites and I use 1and1 to register and host. 1and1.com Good Luck
etcswjoe Posted August 22, 2014 #3 Posted August 22, 2014 I have used Go Daddy a couple times with no complaints but mostly for domain names.
Brake Pad Posted August 22, 2014 Author #4 Posted August 22, 2014 The site I was looking at is called 50 Webs.com, domain names cost $15 a year
Condor Posted August 22, 2014 #5 Posted August 22, 2014 This is the one I've been using for the last 20 years.... http://nic.com/ You can search for names you might like, and they'll let you know if it's been taken. Your also going to need your website hosted. Probably the ISP you have now will do it, although it pays to shop around. Size plays a lot into the costs. FORD pays a ton.... me? I'm a pipsquick... There are also places where you can make your own website, but if you'd like to get carried away I've been using MS Front Page since I started... IT's a wyswyg editor and is easy for the basics. Good Luck....
SilvrT Posted August 22, 2014 #6 Posted August 22, 2014 GoDaddy has pretty much everything you need including Domain Name registration, Web hosting and Web creation, Email accounts, etc. You can buy very inexpensive Web creation software for around $50 that are very easy to use. Once you've created your web with them on your home computer, you simply FTP upload them to your Web hosting co at your domain. Here's a couple I use... WebEasy Pro http://www.avanquest.com/USA/software/webeasy-professional-10-new-version-500665?meta=work&cat=design&sub=web-design&rs4=VCOM_US_PPC_0514&gclid=CJyMxvipp8ACFYNsfgodAX0Anw NetObjects Fusion http://netobjects.com/
Freebird Posted August 22, 2014 #7 Posted August 22, 2014 I use Google for all my domain registrations and they have been fine. For hosting, I use Knowhost.com for VentureRider.org and for Touringhogs.com. I use Site5 for a couple others. Both are excellent hosts. I agree that Frontpage is a good editor for beginners but I don't think it is on the market any longer and hasn't been for several years. It is fine if you can find a used copy somewhere.
stanG Posted August 22, 2014 #8 Posted August 22, 2014 I am using GoDaddy for domain registration hosting and email for our radio station. I am using the Joomla interface built in to the GoDaddy hosting and purchased an inexpensive template that I modified to suit our needs. It has been trouble free. "Have fun out there" stanG
SilvrT Posted August 22, 2014 #9 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) I agree that Frontpage is a good editor for beginners but I don't think it is on the market any longer and hasn't been for several years. It is fine if you can find a used copy somewhere. I have to disagree with you (and anyone else) on FrontPage. Having been a software instructor for longer than Windows has been on the market and have taught FrontPage many times, compared to what's available over the past 10 or more years, it fails miserably as a "beginner" Web site builder IMHO. 2003 was the last version I believe. Did a google search and found Microsoft's latest offspring of FrontPage ... Expression Web, which is free. Haven't tried it though. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36179 My advice ... forget FrontPage FWIW, I switched to NetObjects some 14 years ago because of it's ease of use compared to FrontPage. In defense of Front Page, I started out building my website using HTML coding. It was a struggle, but I actually did get a few pages up and running. My next door neighbor who worked for Intel came over one evening and gave me a copy of something new from Microsoft to try out. It was Front Page 98, and it was a hell of a lot better than writing code...most of which I've now forgotten. So FP is what I built my business website with. Nothing fancy, but got the job done, and I controlled the site, and did not have to go through a second party every time I wanted to make a change, and it's very easy to use, and I could up date the website anytime I wanted. I've received compliments from visitors on how much they enjoyed the site, and how easy it was navigate as well. I think the last version is FP2003. And you know what? It's still doing just fine. MOF a lot of the registration forms for the various Internationals and Venture Wests were built using FP2003. So to say it failed miserably might be a little strong. Sure it doesn't have any skyrockets and fancy tricks, but it's still a good solid editor and it suits me just fine.
MiCarl Posted August 23, 2014 #11 Posted August 23, 2014 I use Arvixe. $96 for two years, including one domain registration. I run all my business stuff and our STAR Touring site on that plan. Only extra charge is $9.95/year for registering a 2nd domain. They have a decent site builder and offer a huge selection of free applications. In addition to some static web pages I have 2 shopping cart systems, a forum and blog which are all lightly used. The heaviest use is a database application that I wrote to manage all our parts and service orders. That database application is used all day, every day. Theoretically you get unlimited everything, but that's not strictly true. There servers have hundreds of users and if you habitually use more than your share they will spank you. I've never been spanked. If you grow to where you use too many resources you can send them extra money to move you up - all the way to having servers 100% dedicated to you.

I stand by my words "compared to what's available over the past 10 or more years, it fails miserably as a "beginner" Web site builder".

OK, after re-reading your statement several times, I finally deciphered it, and see what you mean. It's almost like a double negative. By failing miserably as a 'beginner' website editor you mean it's more advanced in comparison to some of the plug and plays available today.
