cowpuc Posted August 21, 2014 #1 Posted August 21, 2014 HELLPPPPPPPPP Every since I upgraded my Mozilla software I have gotten into a HORNETS nest of pop up stuff.. Hopefully whatever it is, its not contagious here!!! If it is, I apologize for any harm I have done!!! Anyway, I have searched on google for free pop up protection and tried a couple,, GOT NO WHERE!! One of them that I downloaded had me run a scan and came back with over 1900 offensive critters!!! Only problem was, after going thru alllllll the process they wanted me to "join" something by giving them a credit card number BEFORE they would remove the offending stuff.... I DID NOT do so,, fearing even more problems.. I am running window's 7, use Firefox for a browser.. Anyone know of a downloadable free anti pop up package that actually is worth the time and effort? If not, should I go shopping at Best Buy or something for some software and if so, whats the best bang for the buck? OH MY GOSH,, this just occurred to me,,, I hope this goofy computer of mine wasnt to blame for the recent episode we had on here!!!!!!!!! BETTER DO THIS NOW - THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL YOUR ADVICE IN ADVANCE (gotta keep clicking stuff off and if they completely take over I may not be able to get back on to thank you!!! Helppppp Puc
tomephil Posted August 21, 2014 #2 Posted August 21, 2014 The only thing I can think of is malwarebites. I am not sure if you have to pay or not as I haven't used it in a long while. Hope this helps

Hope this helps Thanks a GAZILLION T!!! I googled malwarebites, went to their actual website and tried their free download - indeed, that one allowed me to remove the stuff it found and things seem to be doing better (I just now had one pop up BUT I was getting 2 for everyone I tried to click off before I ran that program)!! Got a PM from a good friend for another one to try and I am about to give it a shot.. Will let you guys know if it finds other stuff and works:fingers-crossed-emo
MiCarl Posted August 21, 2014 #5 Posted August 21, 2014 In Firefox: Options-> Content. Mark the check box that says "Block Pop Up windows". Keeps most of mine off. Mozilla Firefox, Windows 7 Professional.

Flyinfool Posted August 21, 2014 #7 Posted August 21, 2014 What you have is NOT pop ups. You have a piece of malware installed on your computer. When you ran their program up to the point of giving your CC number, you installed the malware even deeper and made it harder to get rid of. Malwarebytes gets rid of most but not all bad things. Sometimes you have to run it more than once. Gotta stay off those porn sites........

Money Venture Posted August 22, 2014 #11 Posted August 22, 2014 Ccleaner. Run registry cleaner multiple times until no more errors are found. Save the registry backup when asked each time. Malwarebytes. Full Anti-virus scan. Check add-ons in IE programs tab. Get rid of what you don't use, toolbars and extensions etc. Search Providers you only need one, etc.

dacheedah Posted August 22, 2014 #13 Posted August 22, 2014 latest malware looks like adobe, and is nasty, usually when you try to play video's . Only upgrade any utilities from the actual supporting website.
Mike G in SC Posted August 22, 2014 #14 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) I've also had good results with "Junkware Removal Tool". Seemed to get rid of some others could not find. (But, I use it when nothing else works,,, cause it could remove some friendly files. (Seen a blog saying someone lost a game license file. I don't game.) Edited August 22, 2014 by Mike G in SC
alwrmcusn Posted August 22, 2014 #15 Posted August 22, 2014 I just this week had a "Hijacker" on the computer. Spent a day trying to remove it and then decided to do a complete reformat and install. Takes some time to do, mainly installing all the drivers/updates and software but it does clear everything up.
Money Venture Posted August 22, 2014 #16 Posted August 22, 2014 My post above was the order to run the cleaning. After that is done, run regedit and look in hkcu/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run and runonce. Usually there is not much if anything in there. If you don't recognize what it is, remove it. Then go to hklm/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run and runonce in that one also and do the same thing. Bad things can hide in other areas, but that is going to get most of it out with out a reinstall. BTW, a reinstall IS the only way to assure you don't have any nasties in the machine. Also, no one product can catch everything. Good Luck.
comingbackdown Posted August 26, 2014 #17 Posted August 26, 2014 Holy moly. If you still need any help, Puc, let me know. I've been foxing computers for a long while and have some professional experience in the field. Is also run a full called AdwCleaner which can be found on the Bleeping Computer website. What are you using for Antivirus?
comingbackdown Posted August 26, 2014 #18 Posted August 26, 2014 Jeez... Run a TOOL called AdwCleaner. The phone is seriously hating me tonight.
BlueSky Posted August 27, 2014 #19 Posted August 27, 2014 I use Microsoft Essentials on my computer. It is free and I have not had any problems. you can go to their site and download it for free.
comingbackdown Posted August 27, 2014 #20 Posted August 27, 2014 Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the lowest rated Antivirus programs in existence. It may be free, but you get what you pay for.
BlueSky Posted August 27, 2014 #21 Posted August 27, 2014 Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the lowest rated Antivirus programs in existence. It may be free, but you get what you pay for. like I said, I have been using it and my wife has been using it for a couple of years on the recommendation of our son who just graduated with a degree in computer science and we have not had any issues with virus or ad ware. Maybe there are better programs out there. There always is.
IronMike Posted August 27, 2014 #23 Posted August 27, 2014 Four IT guys I know use MSSE also and recommended it for me. One is in charge of a World wide company the other the entire state of Michigan. I have it solely in five computers, no problems. I have had serious problems with any anti Virus I pay for, they high jack your system and force things on you .... the programs themselves are spyware. Norton is the worst I think. And once it is on there, it will never be all the way off. I think MS has an interest in protecting their own program. Just set it up right, update and don't be stupid with things. And so far still FREE.
comingbackdown Posted August 27, 2014 #24 Posted August 27, 2014 I worked in IT for a while. The three worst offenders I saw for failing to stop malware were MSE, AVG and Norton. I run Kaspersky Internet Security and I've never had a problem in a few years with it. I've seen people royally screw it up by not following instructions though. The only one I've personally had more fun with was Sophos, but it has an issue with false positives on a couple benign items. I'll agree with you about most of the pay programs, but I can't knock the one I use, and I play with active malware samples.
videoarizona Posted August 27, 2014 #25 Posted August 27, 2014 MSSE was another program by a small company (forgot the name) before Microsoft bought them out and incorporated their technology into Microsoft's poor anti-virus system. I use: CCleaner - regular cleaning of HD and registry Malwarebytes - Heuritics Cleaning Avast Internet Security (main program) Hijack This - after the fact mostly 3rd party stuff I get from kids and friends Trojan Hunter - After the fact - as above Avast does NOT take over computer like McAfee or Norton. It has caught every virus...and got rid of even the one's I unknowingly let it... Although a new kid on the block is supposed to be quite good as well...Vipre. Oh and popups? Get a different browser. One that allows you to control pop-up windows. FWIW....
