rbig1 Posted August 21, 2014 #1 Posted August 21, 2014 well going to ride a 86 wing around tomorrow. if we like it will buy it. the other bike wants us to stay home. not going to happen. any problems I should know about this year bike. alt has been changed already last year. says there are no problems with it. hay the other bike started it....
buddy Posted August 21, 2014 #2 Posted August 21, 2014 I knew what you meant but the wing dint get a alternator till 1988 so your stating the stator has been changed ? Might ask for receipts or proof since it's a pain to replace Rob my friend was going to buy one and he said it had just been changed and ask me to go with him to check the bike over and it looked really nice but the stator wasn't changed due to bolts and nuts hasn't been touched in many years so we walked away
cowpuc Posted August 21, 2014 #3 Posted August 21, 2014 I took an 86 Wing in on trade years ago, was a nice bike.. If I recall correctly, Honda tilted the motor or changed something in the 86's that made them much better riders than the previous models.. Way good that the stator has recently been addressed, they were a bugger to statorize.. May want to ask if they also changed the timing belt at the same time, may sound stupid but never assume.. Also, same rules apply as with your Venture, its carburated and an older machine.. Personally, the early wings never fit me ergonomically. Certainly nothing like the 1st Gen Yams.. Never rode a 1500 or an 1800 but I hear the 1800 is unreal.. By the way, make SURE its NOT that 1st year fuel injected model (as I recall that was an 85).. Those things had more gizmo's and wiring in them than the space shuttle.. They are rarer which makes the parts for them even more rarer..
rbig1 Posted August 21, 2014 Author #4 Posted August 21, 2014 ya i could not think of how to spell stator. mine blocked.

van avery Posted August 21, 2014 #6 Posted August 21, 2014 I'm reworking a 1986 Aspencade SEi now and it does ride smoother than the Venture. This was the second year fuel injection. 1st year was the 85 LTD model. Alot of the body work on the SEi is different than the carb models ( '86 Aspencade and interstate). I second the motion on the SEi having more wiring than a space shuttle. The center of gravity and seat seeem much lower that the venture. The left side cover on these tend to fall off so if you buy the bike replace the rubber grommets because a left side cover ( used) is over $100. The plastic on the goldwing is better ( thicker) than the venture. I tend to hit my shins on the motor when stopping at corners ( haven't ridden it very much the bike is not licenced). Good luck
rbig1 Posted August 21, 2014 Author #7 Posted August 21, 2014 well I didn't buy it. wife liked the back better. but crash box sounded sloppy.
Bob Myers Posted August 22, 2014 #8 Posted August 22, 2014 compared to a used Venture, a new wing transmission is noisy and sounds sloppy. They all sound like that. Personally, I would be looking for/at a 1500 instead of a 1200. I know where several really nice GL1500 can be had for under $5k, there is actually a GL1500 and an aluminum trailer in Iowa for sale for $4k
