jr71 Posted August 17, 2014 #1 Posted August 17, 2014 Need help, I have an 83 venture that I had on a trickle charge for several weeks, when I then tried to start it the gauges went nuts and the starter did not crank at all. I did check the battery and it was good (13v). Now when I turn the key to on I loose all power to the dash even the clock goes off, and take the key to acc and all seems well. What did I burn up or break? Thanks for all your help on this one.
GaryZ Posted August 17, 2014 #2 Posted August 17, 2014 use a voltmeter and monitor the battery when you press the start button; Normal would be 12.5V dropping to no less than 9V. If the voltage drops below 9V, the battery is bad (will not support a load). You can verify this by jumping the battery from a car . . .
jr71 Posted August 17, 2014 Author #3 Posted August 17, 2014 Will check that out tonight. Does the ignition switch have any contacts that could be dirty? I'm hoping for an easy fix!
bkuhr Posted August 18, 2014 #4 Posted August 18, 2014 I would remove and clean the connections on the battery, then reconnect them. sound like corrosion under the connector
Neil86 Posted August 18, 2014 #5 Posted August 18, 2014 The load on the ACC position of the switch is much less than in the ON position. So a poor connection on battery or main fuse will be able to power the ACC load but not the added load in the ON position. If battery terminal connections are cleaned and you still have the problem in the ON position, test voltage at battery cable, main fuse outlet, if they are at normal battery voltage... then test the signal fuse, ignition fuse on the brown wires feeding them from ignition switch...if low voltage versus main fuse, there may be an ignition switch connection issue.
