I am wiring a trailer light plug on my 2004 Midnight. I apparently need a converter because the running lights and brake lights are separate wires on the bike and my trailers have the standard flat 4-pin connectors including the ground. Is there a converter that solves this problem or something I can make?

I bought the hopkins convertor from Oreilys for 45 bucks, I bought the powered one to isolate the trailer. Look in the classifieds one of our members makes a plug and play harness that makes it really simple to hook up.

Contact Steve M61A1MECH. He is a wiz on the trailer wiring and makes some plug in stuff. Even though he jumped ship to big red. :whistling:

You will need a converter to go from 5 wire system on the bike to a 4 wire system on the trailer, a powered converter / isolator is the best way to go.

My adapter harness lets you do that install with out cutting any wires on the bike's harness.

If you go with a non-powered isolator you could end up with an issue where there is "feedback" back thru the 5-to-4 converter. See http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=87011&page=3

 

I ended up getting the Tow Ready (Reese) Modulites, 119148 from a local RV shop (had to order it). It is an 119147 but has extra cable for power and a fuse module. Works great !

 

Get the harness from M61. Much better than splicing into the wires. I added to the pigtail so I can add additional turn lights (side markers).

For About $15 you add Yellow lights to the trailer, and one wire and wire it to the bike.

The Turns now on the trailer become stops connected together. Use the leftover wire for the right turn wire then add another wire for the left turn wire. Ground and run and stop remain the same.

 

I used a terminal Bock so I can switch it back and forth, if need be. I just split the stop lights again, and plug it into a Four Way and the original function returns and the Yellow lights do not work. (One turn light needs to be on the far end from ground.) I think Im getting too complicated. But you can figure it out.

 

With all the electrical crap i have under the seat, I really did not have room for an isolator nor did I want one. Its something else to go wrong and a lot of wires. The bike system will run a trailer, I have a 20 year old trailer with same year old lights burns them fine. LED is even better. As I have one of those too.

bought a 5 wire powered adaptor at a local auto parts store. I didn't purchase the adaptor cable, but should have would have been cleaner and easier. Plug in is below the seat. Wrapped the wires black spiral wrap from Radio shack( my bike is black) but they have clear and white as well.

Next time I get time Im going to do an instructional on this. Might be one of those things you have to see to actually get. BTW Freebird, My new trailer has incandescent bulbs and just like you said, it runs them just fine also. Straight, no converter or isolator.

 

Its as simple as adding a 5 wire plug to the trailer, and adding two dedicated turn lights and wire the current turns together on one circuit as the Brakes. Assuming you know what the bike has on output..... it will match the After on the trailer. Colors Vary these are for instructional purposes only. Could be right on could be slightly different.

 

Now, ------------------------------- After out from bike in to trailer

White Ground ----------------- WHite Ground

Brown Run ---------------- Brown Run

Yellow Turn L & Stop ---------------- Yellow Turn Left

Green Turn R & Stop ---------------- Green Turn Right

Nothing ---------------- New wire Brakes to two brake lights. I used RED for Stop.

 

So just add one wire to the bike to the 5 wire plug, and to the 5 wire plug on the trailer and then connect it to a STOP light on the trailer and then on to the OTHER STOP light on the trailer. The previous TURN and STOP wires on the trailer will now serve as TURN LEFT or RIGHT ONLY from the bike. (on a four wire system the served as a Brake AND Turn. No more!)

 

I suggest using LED lights but be aware they have a ground and positive that cannot be mixed up or they will not light. All you will need is One length of wire from bike to the lights and Two new Amber Turn lights mounted on the trailer.

OK...I'm not trying to fuss at you but there is a better way to bookmark threads that you want to save until later. Buy the wire harness from Steve someone already listed his info. He ships so fast it could be perishable and make it on time!

He will even add 4 feet of wire to it if you want. I have like 4 of them the one I use most is the one with the Extra wire, It just plugs in under the seat and When i Tow I plug it in and when I don't I unplug that unsightly mess.

 

It runs down my left side along the eyebrow, I tapped high power magnets to it to hold it in place. The last magnet is at the trailer Draw bar. Takes like 2 minutes to install and 1 to take off.
